LIVE AFL: Pies' desperate bid to curb 'unstoppable' Lions star in ... (Fox Sports)

For the first time in three years, the Easter Thursday game is back in front of a packed Gabba crowd, as in-form Brisbane and Collingwood collide.

The Pies entered halftime with a bit of momentum, but a goal to Charlie Cameron early in the third quarter helped the Lions reestablish their ascendancy. Later in the term, Marcus Adams kicked his first goal since joining the Lions in 2019 and was swarmed by teammates as their side went up by 25 points. The Pies entered quarter-time with a lead, but it was quickly undone as the Lions kicked three goals in the opening nine minutes of the match. In 2020, the Magpies became the first AFL team to play five two-metre-tall players, and are almost the first to play six of them tonight. Then in 2020 the game was missed due to the pandemic, and in 2021 due to a Brisbane Covid outbreak it was moved to Melbourne, where the Lions won off a Zac Bailey goal after the siren. For the first time in three years, the Easter Thursday game is back in front of a packed Gabba crowd, as in-form Brisbane and Collingwood collide.

Revisiting the Brisbane Lions' 2002 premiership victory ahead of ... (The Roar)

This Thursday night, the Brisbane Lions will mark the 20th anniversary of the second of their hat trick of premierships when they welcome Collingwood…

But under the management of Chris Fagan and David Noble (now Kangaroos coach), the club has rocketed back up the ladder, reaching the finals for three consecutive seasons. Then he captained the West Coast Eagles to the flag the following season. The voting procedure was widely panned post-match as the judges were required to cast their votes by midway through the final quarter. It was their biggest win since Round 16, 2007. Since then, only Chris Judd (in 2005) has won the medal from the losing side. This ended a streak of 253 VFL/AFL quarters in which the Lions booted at least one major.

AFL clash turns nasty as two stars floored by dodgy hits (Wide World of Sports)

Two ugly marking contests marred the first half of Brisbane's clash with Collingwood at The Gabba.

Gardiner leapt into the back of Daicos and tucked his arm to dig his shoulder into his opponent. "The ball wasn't within reach of Cox," Matthews said. But Cox - who did not even attempt to get a hand near the ball - leapt off the ground and aimed his knee straight at the back of his opponent.

Lions hold off plucky Pies in Easter Thursday thriller (AFL)

BRISBANE has proven too strong for a brave Collingwood outfit, winning by seven points in an Easter Thursday thriller at the Gabba.

He thumped the ball high, long and straight and celebrated his first goal in Brisbane colours by being mobbed by his teammates. It's been five years since Marcus Adams kicked a goal in the AFL, but he broke the drought in fine style during the third term. He finished with 33 for the night to continue a fine start to 2022. Scott Pendlebury lined up alongside Neale at the first bounce and probably had the better of the battle in the first quarter, racking up eight disposals to Neale's four (and a goal). However, Brisbane's milestone man got on top in the second term and gathered 14 touches in a defining quarter. The reliable Lion was reported for rough conduct and will now await his fate. After trailing at quarter-time, the Lions put the foot down with a six-goal second term and managed to keep the Magpies at bay in front of 32,312 fans to win 15.8 (98) to 14.7 (91).

'Arms out is 50, mate': AFL greats baffled as Lions star penalised for simple act.

“That looked like he just turned around to talk to the umpire, so if they’re gonna do it, they need to be firm on everyone.” “They brought it in for the first weekend of the pre-season games and the umpires were so hard on it, but then players have been able to get away week-in week-out. “He was actually turning around to talk, and the umpire said you put your arms out,” former Brisbane player Luke Hodge said on commentary.

Match Report: Lions Hold Off Pies In Gabba Thriller (Brisbane Lions)

When – and where - it mattered most, Brisbane had just a little too much class for a gutsy Collingwood.

Mature Lions find the answers when challenged by gutsy Collingwood (Brisbane Times)

The Brisbane Lions have rolled to their fourth win of the season, too strong for a gutsy Collingwood side which pushed their stronger opponents all the way.

Six goals came in a rush, flipping a 12-point quarter-time lead to a four-goal deficit, and it looked like the game Magpies were about to be blown away. In the second quarter, however, the Brownlow medallist exploded, winning 15 touches as the Lions surged out of the centre. The Lions had a far greater spread of weapons, and anyone taking them on this season is going to have a hard time spiking their spread of attacking guns. Collingwood were impressive – not many sides will get within seven points of the Lions at the Gabba this year – but it was a mark of the Lions’ maturity that they found the answers when challenged. Collingwood went into the game without two of their best forwards in Brody Mihocek and Jamie Elliott, and there was always going to be a question on whether they could find enough goals. But the Lions bottled the play up from there to hold on by seven points.
