Atletico Madrid vs Man City: Ratings and analysis as Guardiola's ... (iNews)

City ran the gauntlet in the Wanda, experiencing the gamut of the Atletico Madrid experience - and are in the semi-finals to recount the tale.

City ran the gauntlet in the Wanda, experiencing the gamut of the Atletico Madrid experience. So when Ilkay Gundogan hits the post from seven yards and has a diving header blocked two seconds later, everyone shrugs and says “Well yes, that makes total sense”. From the 20th minute until half-time, they had three-quarters of the ball and all of the control. They pressed in the final third and – more surprisingly – were successful with it. The Wanda Metropolitano is new and less characterful, but it also contains some of Europe’s best stadium acoustics. The first 160 minutes of this two-legged tie was nothing but window dressing, Diego Simeone’s team positioning themselves for a final assault and Manchester City hoping to have a lead to repel them with.

Felipe sent off late as Manchester City battle past feisty Atlético Madrid (The Guardian)

Manchester City held on through a fractious second half to draw 0-0 with Atlético Madrid and progress to the Champions League semi-final.

City had gone close from an early corner, Stones heading high, and they created the big chance of the opening period in the 30th minute. From the restart, they pushed high, bringing the aggression and they had numerous flickers in front of goal, which the home fans were ultra quick to get behind. Felipe had left him dazed and bloodied after jumping into him in a 12th minute aerial challenge, wiping him out with a ferocious upper body barge. The heart-in-mouth moments for the travelling City support continued to come. Grealish had called Savic the C-word during the melee, which led to Savic grabbing his hair. With Foden down, all hell broke loose, another Atlético defender, Stefan Savic, trying to lift him to his feet and being shooed away by Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was an unused City substitute, as everybody converged.

Man City hold off Atletico Madrid to reach Champions League semifinals (ESPN Australia)

Manchester City secured their place in the Champions League semifinals for the second consecutive season after a fiery goalless draw with Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday saw them progress 1-0 on aggregate.

As the crowd in Madrid that felt more like a cauldron roared their team on, City showed real signs of discomfort for the first time. But it was only in the second half that they began to seriously threaten the City goal. We've had our chances, we haven't taken advantage of them and congratulations to the rival, but Atleti deserved more."

Atletico Madrid vs. Manchester City takeaways: Simeone's dark arts ... (CBSSports.com)

Three things we learned as City march to the Champions League semifinal.

City are considered to be one of the best teams in Europe, so it's only fitting that they have to defeat one of the best teams in Champions League history as they look to win their first title. In the 91st minute, Felipe took down Phil Foden to get his second yellow card and an early shower, but not before the benches cleared in a coming together from the players as they pushed and shoved each other. The clash would also rear its head in the tunnel after the match with words being exchanged and at least something being thrown which could lead to a fine from UEFA. Jack Grealish and Stefan Savic took center stage during that skirmish, as the two exchanged words which resulted in Savic yanking Grelish's hair. It was quite the difference as the first half saw City take eight shots to Atletico's one but only producing an xG of 0.61. They embody the fiery spirit of their manager and will do whatever is needed to wind up the other team and hope that they're frustrated enough to make a mistake.
