In the Kingdom Hearts 4 announcement blog post, Square Enix claims that Quadratum is "a large, expansive city" and is set "in a gorgeous, realistic world." It's possibly Square Enix and Disney are looking for another hook to get people excited for the next game. During a Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event, Square Enix unveiled our first look at the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kingdom Hearts 4 may include a glimpse of Star Wars (Tom's Guide)

A tiny detail in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer has launched a whole lot of Star Wars speculation, but it's not a ton of information to go on.

It's worth noting, at least, that Kingdom Hearts 4 represents the first opportunity to incorporate Star Wars into a mainline Kingdom Hearts game. The series has now been around for 20 years, and it’s worth asking what a fourth mainline installment could accomplish that the previous dozen games haven’t. At the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary Event, Square Enix released the first-ever teaser trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, confirming the game’s existence, teasing a few story details and even giving us a glimpse of gameplay.

Kingdom Hearts 4 could include Star Wars characters (Winter Is Coming)

You typically play as Sora, a teenager who wields a mystical Keyblade, and pal around with Goofy and Donald Duck on various adventures. They're charming games, ...

Another strong indicator is the fact that starting in 2023, Electronic Arts will no longer have the exclusive rights to make Star Wars games. But the thing that’s got people talking the most is a very brief glimpse of a suspiciously familiar metal object in a forest. He’s hanging out in an urban cityscape reminiscent of the real world, which is a pretty interesting direction for the series to go in — though you can bet those Disney worlds will be in there too.

Predicting Kingdom Hearts IV's new Disney worlds (VentureBeat)

As both a big fan of Disney and Kingdom Hearts, I have a better shot than most at guessing which Disney properties will inspire KH4.

Much of Kingdom Hearts IV is likely to have a more realistic vibe with all of its potential live action-inspired levels, but I bet we’ll get one world that goes full bonkers. We want to tell you how the news matters to you -- not just as a decision-maker at a game studio, but also as a fan of games. And I can’t imagine Disney would say no, given the success of Kingdom Hearts III and its willingness to throw Star Wars and Marvel at any multimedia project imaginable. Kingdom Hearts IV is almost certainly going to have a Marvel world. Plus, Square Enix created that whole ship sailing mechanic for Kingdom Hearts III’s Pirates of the Caribbean level. Kingdom Hearts II, for example, had Lion King stage that turned Sora into a little lion. And with a new Kingdom Hearts on the horizon, it’s time to speculate! Even during the buildup to Kingdom Hearts III, many wondered and hoped that Star Wars and Marvel would make appearances. Moana is also likely due for some Kingdom Hearts representation. After Kingdom Hearts III introduced Pixar levels for the first time, I’m sure we’ll see more worlds from that studio’s works in the sequels. Kingdom Hearts III already changed Sora’s look depending on which world he visited, including giving him a more realistic appearance in the Pirates of the Caribbean level. As both a big fan of Disney and Kingdom Hearts, I have a better shot than most at guessing which Disney properties will inspire this new entry’s worlds.

Should Kingdom Hearts 4 Include Marvel and Star Wars Worlds ... (Den of Geek)

Square Enix recently released a special 20th anniversary trailer for upcoming Kingdom Hearts games. At the halfway mark, the video unveiled the news almost ...

Disney might own the rights to Star Wars and Marvel, but permission to potentially include one in a Kingdom Hearts game isn’t the same as permission to include the other. If the trailer does indeed include an AT-ST tease, then Square Enix has finally come to an agreement with Lucasfilm and Disney. Needless to say, this would be a big win for Kingdom Hearts and Star Wars fans who also play games. After all, Kingdom Hearts is a collaborative effort between Square Enix and Disney, and Disney has owned the keys to the Star Wars galaxy for a decade. At its core, Kingdom Hearts was always a glorified commercial for Disney properties, and including Disney-owned properties such as Star Wars and Marvel won’t change that. However, while Disney’s library of properties has grown significantly since Kingdom Hearts’ humble beginnings, the House of Mouse has yet to introduce its Marvel or Star Wars franchises to the series. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has entertained gamers for two decades by combining the disparate worlds of Final Fantasy and all of the characters Disney has to offer.

Sora's new design in the 'Kingdom Hearts 4' trailer shocks fans ... (Inverse)

The trailer for 'Kingdom Hearts 4' features a new look for protagonist Sora that some think looks out of place. But there's a perfectly good explanation.

Sora was bound to have a new look in Kingdom Hearts IV- seeing him evolve into an anime protagonist is just part of the game’s appeal. In Kingdom Hearts 3, the wizard Yen Sid gave him fancier clothes that can shift into different designs, allowing Sora to maintain some form of continuity throughout his adventure and essentially blend in to any world he might visit. On Twitter, some argued the semi-realistic style was a perfect fit for the franchise’s aesthetic, while other users expressed a mocking concern over how the look would mesh with the usual Kingdom Hearts aesthetic — can we expect a more realistic take on Donald and Goofy?

Square Enix has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is on the way, with a reveal trailer shown off as part of the series' 20th anniversary.

The Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer itself features a modern city setting called Quadratum, where it’s revealed that Sora has been for seven days. The trailer then ends with a short clip of Donald and Goofy – who accompanied Sora through most of the Kingdom Hearts games – searching for Sora before an unseen figure ambushes them. Even before these games were released, reports were suggesting that they wouldn’t be worth the price, as they require a constant internet connection to the cloud to play.

Kingdom Hearts 4: Why Newer Disney Franchises May Not Have ... (Game Rant)

There are many Disney IPs that fans hope will show up in Kingdom Hearts 4, and there may be a few reasons why they haven't been included yet.

Thankfully, there is hope for Kingdom Hearts 4 to include many faces that haven't popped up in the series yet, finally giving them their due. However, they may not have been included due to the immense scale and coordination taken to develop a project of this magnitude. With the original plot of Kingdom Hearts finished, it's a clean slate for the developers to take Sora, Donald, and Goofy on new adventures to wondrous lands. Over the past few decades, not only has the company created vibrant animated epics like Encanto and Zootopia, it has also acquired some of the biggest names in entertainment. The Kingdom Hearts series is no different, with 2019's Kingdom Hearts 3 being used to wrap up loose ends and tie together dangling plot threads that began in the original release. While nothing is certain yet, there are a few reason these IPs may not have been used in the series but could appear now.

Now, I'm not saying Kingdom Hearts 4 will definitely feature Spider-Man and Lando Calrissian teaming up with the cast of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to punch Hades in the face, but I'm saying it's a possibility. These are games that began as crossovers between the various worlds of Final Fantasy games and Disney movies, and with Kingdom Hearts 3 stretched into Disney's Pixar properties, including excursions into Toy Story and Monstropolis from Monsters Inc. A trip to the forest moon of Endor would certainly be strange, but strange is what Kingdom Hearts is all about. As shared by multiple people on Twitter though, we may have gotten our first glimpse of one as early as the first trailer. Kingdom Hearts 4 is still in "early development" meaning that the worlds we saw in the trailer may look completely different or be cut completely by the time the game is officially released. Another theory is that Sora and co’s drastic new look in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer could be due to Square Enix wanting to incorporate more live-action films into the game rather than sticking solely to animated films, which is what Sora’s previous design matched up to.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Is Being Developed with Unreal Engine 5 (Game Rant)

In a surprise reveal during Kingdom Hearts' 20th anniversary event, Square Enix announced a new mainline entry to the franchise, titled Kingdom Hearts 4.

Players have already seen how good the engine is for showcasing action scenes in a modern city through The Matrix Awakens demo, and hopefully it will translate as well in Kingdom Hearts 4. The report came from Famitsu, which explained that while the debut trailer video of Kingdom Hearts 4 is actually a real-time rendering in Unreal Engine 4, the full game is currently being developed in parallel using Unreal Engine 5. Seeing that the team is already familiar with Unreal Engine 4 during the development of Kingdom Hearts 3, making the transition to Epic's newest game engine should be easy enough for them.

Even Square Enix seemed to understand things have gotten Out Of Hand when it released a collection of Kingdom Hearts games titled The Story So Far. As time went on, spinoffs accrued like compounding late fees to the point that they got so intimidating that the library morphed from a font of joy to a source of shame. The result of all this twisty-turny, timey-wimey storytelling is a lack of coherence that manifests in the games. Multiple reviews of the game pointed to the game’s overwrought story as a contributing factor to its poor reception. The game needs a clean slate, and Kingdom Hearts 4 could be the jumping-on point me and other lapsed keyblade wielders desperately need. Kingdom Hearts 4 then represents a chance for me and my beloved franchise to reconcile.

'Kingdom Hearts 4' has finally been revealed, and the first trailer packs in a ton of hints for both lore and potential new locations.

It’s incredibly weird but creates a real reason that Lightning might be able to run into Sora in the world of Quadratum. Realistically, both characters are somewhere in Japan. With Neo: The World Ends With You releasing in 2021, it would make the perfect crossover for Kingdom Hearts 4, and all signs quite literally point to that happening. The secret scene of Kingdom Hearts 3 showed Quadratum for the first time, with Sora thrown smack dab into the middle of Shibuya Crossing, with the prominent “104” building in the background. Kingdom Hearts 3 was first announced in 2013, two years before the release of The Force Awakens. With Disney still nailing down the property, there’s simply no way Star Wars could have appeared before, but it’s a different story now. The biggest and easily most exciting possibility is a potential Star Wars world that may be featured in Kingdom Hearts 4. With a new chapter of the series starting the possibilities are practically limitless, but here are a few hints from the Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal trailer.
