Nigerian Bishop, Emmanuel Badejo, of Oyo Diocese shares his views about what Palm Sunday is saying to our world today.
Palm Sunday and its relationship to the passion of Jesus Christ reminds us all that true glory is only found in self-giving and sacrifice. Therefore, carrying it is a prayer and a desire for the sustainability of life and humanity. Palm Sunday is the celebration of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where he was to be crucified.
Catholic Faithful Observe 'PALM SUNDAY' a Week before 'EASTER SUNDAY' in 'Rome of the East' Mangaluru: The season of Lent has always called for.
In the first part of the service, the faithful remembered the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, acclaimed by all the people, by taking part in the procession. The blessing of the Palms ceremony was held in front of the Athma Jyothi Ashram, Souza Lane, Kadri in the City , and the palms were blessed by Fr Peter Cyprian D’souza and Fr Dolphy Devdas Serrao, both in-charge at the Ashram, following which the palms were distributed to the faithful. After the procession, the solemn Mass was celebrated in remembrance of the passion of Christ, by the clergy. Palm Sunday is both a happy and sad day. Christians take these palms, which are often blessed by clergy, to their homes where they hang them alongside Christian art (especially crosses and crucifixes) or keep them in their Bibles or devotionals. Quite a few Catholic faithful remained home and watched the Palm Sunday ceremony on TV or online, but for people who attend church regularly, there was nothing like the real thing — whether it’s the quiet happiness of Palm Sunday, the solemnity of Good Friday, or all-out rejoicing on Easter Sunday.

The Passion narrative is read and the faithful participates throughout the reading. Yes. Palm Sunday can also be referred to as Passion Sunday. Palm Sunday comes from the fact that it honors Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, where the people carried palm branches. Palm harvesters can be found around the world. The procession symbolizes those who went to meet the Lord as he entered Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is also much longer than usual. Palm Sunday is the day we remember and honor Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem a week before his crucifixion would take place. All four Gospels tell us that people cut branches from palm trees and laid them across Jesus’ path and waved them in the air as he entered Jerusalem triumphantly a week before his death.
Today's Palm Sunday message comes from the Rev. Will Shewey, pastor at Shades of Grace United Methodist Church in Kingsport.
This 40-day Lenten journey began on Ash Wednesday. Dried palm leaves left over from last year’s Palm Sunday observance were burned, and the ashes were smudged upon believers’ foreheads in the image of a cross. I always remind each one that this branch is a testimony of sharing faith. He crosses the threshold of the Mount of Olives for a final visit. Surely, he who comes in the name of the Lord will set up an earthly kingdom and reign from the throne once occupied by David. They had missed the point of all his sermons. Lent comes from an old English word that means “spring.” As the holiday called Easter draws near, we celebrate new life and resurrection from the sleep of winter that has covered earth. Christians around the world have been observing a 40-day liturgical season called Lent. The focus has been upon repentance.

No matter how one feels about Jesus we must remember that by the next Sunday they found out the truth about Him. Easter Sunday the most glorious thing that ever happened on earth took place; His Resurrection. And it is because of the resurrection of Jesus that any of us have hope and assurance of eternal life. Palm Sunday mentality will get you to worship one Sunday but not the next. “Bring Jesus to town and we will let the world know we love Him.” But when the enthusiasm drains away, when the excitement is over; when the energy of a popular moment is gone, it is most often replaced with a weak complacency which is drained of its power. He did what He did in order that the prophecy in God’s Word would be fulfilled. The Palm Sunday mindset is very fickle, it lasts for less than a week. They desire a Jesus that they can get excited about when they desire Him to do something wonderful for them. The Sunday we call Palm Sunday is the day when we commemorate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem at the beginning of the week which would culminate in His death, burial and resurrection. Jesus did what He did on Palm Sunday for the single purpose of fulfilling prophecy. They did not see His true Purpose which was to seek and save the lost; to provide a sacrifice; to make salvation possible. They simply missed the profound significance of the day in which they were living. It was a week filled with astounding events which had been put into place by God Himself. The life of Jesus, his 33 years, had been lived and His purpose fulfilled, except for the events of the week which began with Palm Sunday. Everything that had happened with Him was very important, but the crux of his time on earth was to be realized beginning with His entrance into Jerusalem the Sunday before his crucifixion and only one week before His resurrection. So, the weight of all time rested on what would happen with Jesus in this one week out of the history of the whole world.

In the Gothic Church of Spain the Symbol was not given till today. While most call this day “Palm Sunday,” it is also called by at least four other names. They assembled today in the Church and received a special instruction on the Symbol [the Creed], which had been given to them in the previous scrutiny.

"The good thief accepted God as his life was ending, and in this way, his life began anew," the Pope said. We lose sight of why we are in the world and evFhimen end up committing senseless acts of cruelty." This, the Holy Father explained, "is how Jesus acts in our regard: He makes Himself our advocate. God, the Pope reminded, "sees a son or a daughter in each person." Jesus, the Pope recalled, did not rebuke His executioners or threaten punishments in the name of God, but rather prayed for the evildoers. The Lord did not defend or justify Himself. Rather, He prayed to the Father, offered mercy to the good thief, and said: “Father, forgive them” amid "the most searing physical pain" of His Passion.
Many Christian faithful made small crosses from palms to celebrate the day and some churches also held processions, reenacting Christ's entry into Jerusalem.

Vatican City, Apr 10 (EFE).- Pope Francis on Sunday denounced the “folly of war” in a “violent and tormented world” during his Palm Sunday homily.
“We see this in the folly of war, where Christ is crucified yet another time”. “He is crucified in refugees who flee from bombs with children in their arms. He is crucified in the elderly left alone to die; in young people deprived of a future; in soldiers sent to kill their brothers and sisters,” he continued.
