Manchester City and Liverpool meet at the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League summit meeting that could decide the title and set the tone for the rest of the season. “I wouldn’t say I’m thankful that City is that good but it didn’t deny our development,” said the German, whose side have not won in the league at the Etihad since 2015. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been involved in some epic battles in recent seasons, in particular in 2018/19 when City pipped Liverpool to the title by a single point despite a record points haul for the runners-up.

Man City vs Liverpool LIVE (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City take on Liverpool FC at the Etihad this afternoon in a crucial fixture in the Premier League title race.

It's a draw in the end and now we need to believe from here until the end." "Riyad chose to chip the keeper, if it goes in it's a wonder goal but it didn't happen. We played great and created enough chances to win but it didn't happen." We conceded twice but the way we played was very good. "We tried to condition their game the way they wanted but they are obviously very good at what they do so it's not easy. It was a great game and the result, we have to live with and can live with. I want to win the Premier League but it doesn't matter." For the demanding of the team we have to play, not because I prefer these players." The seasons being there all the time, the way we perform, I admire how we think to break the defences. Of course a massive game, we know what we have to do. We face them, it was a good advert for the Premier League. Both teams tried to win. City went into the game leading the Premier League by a point, with Liverpool capitalising on some dropped points from City and their own games in hand to close the gap in recent weeks.

Man City vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League team news, line-ups ... (The Independent)

Follow the action as Pep Guardiola's men take on Jurgen Klopp's in this top of the table clash at the Eithad Stadium.

Of the previous 49 games, Liverpool have won 20 and Man City 11. Over the past four years it has grown and now it has become a really big thing. It is just another game for me and I just want to express myself. Pep Guardiola’s City were 14 points clear at the top of the table in January but a run of 10 consecutive victories for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has seen them cut that gap to just one point ahead of this afternoon’s clash. If there’s a winner, they will likely be the favourites going forward. The team news is going to drop in around 15 minutes time.

Indeed, the most typically Guardiola midfielder on show will be Thiago, who will allow Liverpool to take the sting out of proceedings when required, while Trent Alexander-Arnold will be darting into midfield from full-back every bit as much as Joao Cancelo.

City v Liverpool: Walker returns as Guardiola makes three changes (Manchester City FC)

Pep Guardiola has made three changes for Manchester City's top of the table clash with Liverpool.

- Liverpool have won each of their past 10 league games, keeping eight clean sheets in the process. - PhilFodenhas scored in each of his past three appearances against Liverpool - the only player to net in four successive top-flight games against the Reds is Jamie Vardy, who did so in five consecutive fixtures between 2016 and 2017. - RiyadMahrezis aiming to become the third City player to score in six consecutive Premier League home games, after Uwe Rosler in 1994 and Alvaro Negredo in 2013. - The Reds have not kept a clean sheet in any of their past 11 league matches at Etihad. - City have lost just one of our last 12 Premier League home games against Liverpool (W7 D4), going down 4-1 in Jürgen Klopp’s first visit to the Etihad in the competition in November 2015. Guardiola admitted he expects his side will have to defend in spells against a side boasting an incredible amount of firepower, so the return of one of his most trusted lieutenants in Walker is a welcome boost.

Sadio Mane's second-half strike promises an end to the season that could be as breathless and brilliant as this 90 minutes at the Etihad.

Golden chance in the third minute of additional time could have won it 6/10 In truth, it was a brief interlude of Liverpool success into a first half that showcased exactly why Guardiola’s side have set the running in the title race. Subbed off on 75 minutes 6/10 When it arrived, City’s second goal was the kind of moment in which De Bruyne makes things look devastatingly simple. Within the first five minutes City had found a series of angles that hauled Liverpool way out of their comfort zone. De Bruyne is no stranger to providing sorcery on the biggest of occasions but this time his magical left foot was aided by an almighty deflection off Joel Matip that deceived Alisson. The four goals were excellent but it was the speed of thought of the protagonists on either side that impressed the most. Andy Robertson found space and Trent Alexander-Arnold with a wonderful cross which invited Diogo Jota to sweep past Ederson. How else to evaluate the situation after a game laced with as much danger for the respective defences as this one? If Erik ten Hag was watching on in Amsterdam, he might be thinking twice about signing the contract Manchester United have prepared for him. And for the second time in three seasons, you could see both of these blue riband contenders winning every single one of their remaining league matches. We have to be nearly perfect to beat this team in a game and over a season as well,” Klopp said.

Man City vs. Liverpool takeaways: Pep Guardiola's Gabriel Jesus ... (ESPN)

From Mo Salah to Gabriel Jesus, the top-of-the-table Man City-Liverpool clash didn't necessarily go as expected. Here are the key talking points.

It would be a blow to lose a player who is again on course to score 30 goals in all competitions again this season but it isn't the nightmare scenario some are predicting. Liverpool have recruited well to bring in Jota and Luis Diaz to ensure there isn't an over-reliance on Salah and it means, should the Egypt international depart, they are ready-made replacements to fill the void. There is no doubting what Mohamed Salah gives to Liverpool but they are far from a one-man team. Despite being the only recognised striker in the City squad, Guardiola has had success playing him on the right wing in the past. The Brazilian has only scored seven goals all season but the majority have been big ones. Here are three thoughts on the game.

It was said of Ali and Frazier that they were fighting for "the heavyweight championship of each other" by the time they got to Manila and there is something of this about City and Liverpool at this point. 1st minute: Liverpool kickoff amid a hail of boos and promptly boot the ball out of play. Of course, they can all operate in all three of the forward positions and that'll be one of the reasons Guardiola has gone for this selection. 27th minute: Walker is playing very, very high up the field here and Liverpool haven't quite worked out what to do about it just yet. 34th minute: Cancelo cuts in from the left and fizzes one just wide of the near post into the side netting. That's not the usual ploy for Guardiola - one normally tucks into midfield or forms a back three with the centre-backs, and it's causing Liverpool some discomfort. It's a better result for Guardiola's team: they remain a point ahead and the destiny of the title is in their hands. 77th minute: City deal with a Liverpool corner and Walker looks to release Mahrez's fresh legs. 71st minute: Salah cuts inside on to that lethal left foot and Cancelo makes a vital block to deflect it behind. 79th minute: Diaz wins the ball back on halfway, City scramble back frantically to eventually snuff out the attack. 91st minute: Fabinho and De Bruyne each fly in for a lose ball. Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo each rampaged forward and the Portugal international’s lovely floated pass found Jesus’ probing run for him to lift a clever finish beyond his compatriot in the Liverpool goal.

Manchester City vs. Liverpool player ratings: Stars shine as Premier ... (CBSSports.com)

So how did each individual do on Sunday? We've got you covered with player ratings from the match. CBS Sports HQ Newsletter.

The intensity with which his side pressed from the outset was a clear change in approach, one that proved to be extremely effective in disrupting Liverpool's rhythm. One of the few players on the pitch not to shine brightly, an early miss where he could have put the ball wider of Alisson setting the tone for a game where he struggled to live up to the high standards he has set recently. One suspected it was his off ball qualities that convinced Guardiola to start him, if so it was a decision that was justified by a player who always seemed to be on hand to steal the loose balls. Clearly at the peak of his powers there was often nothing Fabinho could do to keep up with him when he drove through midfield and though his goal had a touch of good fortune to it that was thoroughly earned by everything else he offered. He was not to be outdone by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the battle of the creative full backs, his peach of a ball teeing up Gabriel Jesus for the game's third goal. His sliding tackle in the box was as good a piece of defending as you will see in the Premier League this season. A show all of his own, Ederson refused to do things the easy way as he nearly ran the ball past his goal line and parried shots with his chest. Henderson (78') While he had 20 minutes at the end of the game, Liverpool didn't have the ball enough to really set him loose on City. Attracting the attention of the entire City defense fro most of the match, Salah did what he needed to. He didn't get the ball much but his hold up play, when moved to striker, was critical in the second half. Creating zero chances, Henderson wasn't up for the speed of the game and had to be withdrawn for Liverpool to truly chase the match.

If there was one we could draw it was today. We knew it in January. We had to win 18 games. It was a good game for our fans, Liverpool fans, fans in the UK and around the world. "If we win today, we are two points up, that changes nothing. Containing this team for a whole game, even for the Premier League champions, is almost impossible. "Heads up, I said to the team after the game, I don't want one second of sadness. I will have to review the game but I have a feeling we missed an opportunity. City had more of the ball and more shots. It was tough for Klopp's team for much of that first half and yet they scored a goal against City and were almost through on a number of other occasions. In the final minute, substitute Riyad Mahrez curled a free-kick wide of the post. But they played so well at the Etihad Stadium that there were chances to extend the lead. The goalkeepers were prominent in the game, making saves and making mistakes.

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings (NBC Sports)

Manchester City vs Liverpool player ratings: How fared best (and worst) as the defending Premier League champions played the Reds to a thrilling 2-2 draw?

Mohamed Salah: 7 – Put his diagonal through ball, setting up Sadio Mane’s goal, in a museum. Rodri: 6.5 – It wasn’t a game played at a tempo that fit Rodri’s style and strengths, but he’s a vital piece of the operation and remains undroppable for that fact. Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7 – TAA almost requires an attacking rating and a defensive rating at this point, for being so brilliant at the former and absentminded when it comes to the latter. He repaid the faith Guardiola put in him to start such a big game after struggling for regular starts. The amount of quality on display resulted in lots of 7s and 8s being handed out. Guardiola wasn’t going to be beaten that way.

Throwing a much-needed dose of Neil Warnock into Man City v ... (The Guardian)

In today's Fiver: Kevin De Bruyne and VVD have a chat, a raucous away end and Arjen Robben is knackered.

I often went deep and had to fight often enough, but this was also a real fight”– Arjen Robben, now retired, didn’t exactly love his first marathon experience despite the 38-year-old’s very decent time of three hours, 13 minutes and 40 seconds. The Fiver has a new sister email, folks! Despite his anger, Pep was all smiles after the game as he and his opposite number Jürgen Klopp wrapped each other in a warm and tight embrace. These revelations that elite, gifted footballers aren’t actually kept cryogenically frozen in chambers only to be thawed out for training and matches appear to have come as a shock to many viewers, who had no idea that the existence of top athletes can be as mundane, if not more crushingly dull than those lived by the rest of us. Tickets to live shows in June and July are available here so get buying. “This will not happen again.” Following a weekend in which Neil Warnock announced his retirement from management, perhaps one or both clubs could bring him in as an anger-management consultant to help generate some much-needed animosity. This may come as a surprise to anyone who watched him at Arsenal, but Mattéo Guendouzi is actually good at football and has found a soulmate in Jorge Sampaoli, his manager at Marseille. Adam White shares some thoughts on their relationship and the rest of the Ligue 1. Don’t bother covering it. Or that both men live in Cheshire, hence the pow-wows on the school run. Ignore it.
