'Miracle at Marvel' in one Eagles' best wins ever; veteran 'assassin' steps up: 3-2-1.

“The composure of Nick Daicos is something to see. “They haven’t been able to mark the footy inside forward 50 all day. “It means a lot to the group. Injury and Covid have decimated West Coast for the first three rounds of 2022. It led to their first goal of the game through Ollie Henry in the final four minutes. He just knows where they are,” Lyon added. The couple of times they’ve gone forward they’ve hit McGovern and Tom Barrass, so how’s the resolve? The way they’ve gone inside 50 just hasn’t been acceptable,” ex-Hawks sharpshooter Ben Dixon said. “We’ve seen them go quick but right now they’ve got an obstacle and it’s name is Jeremy McGovern and it’s kind of spooked them. But when the match was on the line, it was Kennedy and Darling who took the game away from the Pies as the Eagles recorded a memorable first win in 2022. “You can tell a lot of young guys in the group so the energy is high, it’s good to come over and head back with the win “It’s a great answer from the Eagles because the Magpies have put it to them and got the game back on their terms,” Lyon said.

Undermanned Eagles stun shellshocked Pies (AFL)

A SEVERELY undermanned West Coast has stunned Collingwood at Marvel Stadium, grabbing a massive backs-to-the-wall 14.3 (87) to 10.14 (74) victory on ...

Whether it's an extension of backyard rivalry or a contest to see who can impress father Peter the most won't fuss Craig McRae, in fact he's likely encouraging it, whispering in each Daicos' ear pre-game 'You know Dad doesn't love you as much as your brother - he told me just the other day'. The truth is anyone in black and white is loving them both. Connor West, Xavier O'Neill, Luke Edwards and Patrick Naish all stood up in a midfield missing too many big names to mention. And maybe he's starting to be proven right. The phrase 'one man's misfortune is another's opportunity' has been done to death in football circles, but it's about all Adam Simpson has been able to muster as he's watched player after player become unavailable through the first four rounds of 2022. West Coast missed what he brings the past two years - we all did - but when he's there Willie makes this side a whole different matter, no matter who else is in the side. In true Rioli fashion, he's an unstoppable mix of flash, pressure and courage.

AFL Depleted West Coast Eagles stun Collingwood Magpies in AFL ... (ESPN)

West Coast have overcome their horror run of injuries and COVID-19 dramas for a stunning 13-point AFL upset win over Collingwood.

We still had enough possessions to get the job done," coach Craig McRae said. "We still had enough entries to get the job done. But ultimately, Collingwood only had themselves to blame as they were overrrun late for the second time in as many games. Collingwood had opened the second half with a whopping 12 successive inside 50s to pile the pressure on West Coast, yet had only managed to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a 13-point lead. On Saturday, it was the bedrock of a game where they only had 42 inside 50s to 61 and seven less scoring shots. While Jordan De Goey and Taylor Adams, were out for the Magpies, they started as strong favourites and certainly had plenty of chances to nail the result.

The Eagles veteran players all showed up, Jeremy McGovern providing a solid wall in the backline that proved hard for the Magpies to break through. Willie Rioli was emotional following the gusty win. Brody Mihocek showed no fear and was vital in keeping Collingwood in the game. This will be bad news for Collingwood as they play Brisbane in Round 5 at the Gabba. The game was not all one sided. Running with the flight, McGovern his opponent, a post right in his vision and right on the line.

Match report: Spirited Eagles win a classic (West Coast Eagles)

The West Coast Eagles are on the board in 2022 after delivering a stirring backs-to-the-wall victory over Collingwood at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

When Darling found space where there was none, marked and converted the Eagles had reclaimed the lead with 13 minutes to play and kicked on for a memorable victory on the road. The third quarter was an arm-wrestle, as first Collingwood got on top through a lift in pressure and held the ball inside 50 (+12 for the quarter). Edwards’ first goal in football came from another bullet Ryan pass, and when ex-Tiger Naish joined the club of first-time West Coast goalkickers, the Eagles had answered a run of three-straight goals by Collingwood to reclaim the lead. With McGovern (three intercept marks) and Barrass (two) ruling the skies down back West Coast grew in confidence and had the better of the opening term, going into the first break up by six points thanks to a late Willie Rioli major from a courageous mark. It was a morale-boosting opening and the emerging group of midfielders finding their way at AFL level were contributing in the absence of West Coast’s frontline onball brigade. West Coast drew first blood when Liam Ryan sprinted into the goalsquare and put the exclamation mark on a daring passage of play through the corridor, giving the visitors the perfect start.
