Blakeys to help shape Swans-Roos AFL clash (The West Australian)

John Blakey and son Nick will have important roles on opposing teams when Sydney host North Melbourne on Saturday at the SCG.

"The start of last year, he had a few challenges with his consistency. Obviously his speed is a real standout for him. "It puts things into perspective, but that doesn't step away from the fact that you have to turn up and compete and put the right level of effort into your game." "It gives you some guidance, it gives you some reality as to where things are actually at - average games, average age of different groups," he said of working previously at Brisbane and Adelaide. "He's quite a tall fella - he's probably six-two, six-three - so he has that ability to come across and intercept. "His connection previously with Sydney has given us an insight into the way and the manner they go about it," Noble said.

They didn’t have much luck with the umpiring either, but that seems to be a common problem when they meet the Bulldogs. 293 points against 241 points against Davies-Uniacke is a key inclusion to the Roos midfield mix. Veteran Sam Reid replaces Amartey and should provide the Swans a target up forward. Swans 33 wins.

'Heartbreak for the Roos': Ziebell's five not enough as Swans storm home without star Franklin: 3-2-1.

By half-time at the SCG they had 39, and finished with 65. “I love the move. “You can see as skipper he’s taken it on. “Compared to last week, their intensity at the opposition and to the ball, they are up in the tackle count, and the contested possessions,” Alastair Lynch said. “They have been exceptional at the contest.” “This is the urgency we wanted to see.” “The big news is that Buddy Franklin is out of the game,” Fox Footy’s Alastair Lynch said. This was the leader of the club who set the tone and led from the front after their nightmare previous week. A week later and Noble was in “disbelief” at full time, as he the pain and realisation sunk in that the Kangaroos had been overrun in what would have been one of North Melbourne‘s great wins. “We knew that they were going to respond after last week and they came out there and really gave it to us and we knew we had to step it up late, and they held on for the majority of the game, but it was good that we were able to run over the top eventually. It was the perfect response after Kangaroos coach David Noble had challenged his side to “toe the line” “Proud of the boys.”

North Melbourne shook things up with Jack Ziebell starting forward and he earned an early free kick with a desperate tackle on Nick Blakey that set the tone for the Kangaroos and gave them the opening goal of the match. Franklin was mobbed by thousands of fans after kicking his 1,000th career goal the last time the Swans visited the SCG but this time was forced to watch on for the last quarter and a half when substituted out of the match due to a finger injury. The Kangaroos appeared set for an unlikely victory when Kayne Turner slotted the opening goal of the final term to stretch their lead to 14 points but the Swans were then able to kick the last four goals of the match to prevail 13.8 (86) to 12.3 (75).

Swans survive MASSIVE scare to see off brave Roos (AFL)

AN ISAAC Heeney-inspired Sydney has overcome a spirited North Melbourne to snatch an 11-point victory at the SCG on Saturday.

He racked up an incredible 14 disposals in the final term to go with four marks and a clutch goal to put his side in front with seven minutes remaining. It was nearly a match-winning performance and one that gives Noble another weapon up forward in the future. David Noble swung a surprise before the opening bounce with Jack Ziebell stationed in the forward line. He finished the game with 30 disposals and seven clearances in a brilliant performance. It seems only a matter of time before Jason Horne-Francis takes a mark of the year contender. The former No.1 draft pick returned to run out the match.

Franklin injured in Swans' battling win over Kangaroos (The Age)

Sydney scrambled home against North Melbourne without Lance Franklin, who suffered a finger injury during the match.

He hit the post with a much more straightforward shot during the second term, which highlighted Reid’s foibles in front of goal. Sign up for the Real Footy newsletter. He also gave two free kicks away trying too hard to be creative and being tackled with the ball.

Sydney were made to fight hard against a spirited North Melbourne until Isaac Heeney sealed the win with four seconds remaining.

At the other end, Swans veteran Sam Reid also announced his return with an early goal, taking his chance from a set shot 50m from goal and close to the boundary in the first term. While the Swans will be happy to leave with the four points there will also be some concerns for Paddy McCartin after he went straight down to the changerooms following a heavy knock halfway through the final term. The Kangaroos appeared set for an unlikely victory when Kayne Turner slotted the opening goal of the final term to stretch their lead to 14 points but the Swans were then able to kick the last four goals of the match to prevail 13.8 (86) to 12.3 (75) .
