The five hundred yards that can make or break Masters contenders (The Sydney Morning Herald)

The par-5 known as Firethorn has enthralled golf lovers for almost a century, but what is it that makes the 15th at Augusta so mesmerising?

“You stand on a par-5 you think you can reach and you think it’s a birdie hole, but if you don’t hit a great drive it becomes, ‘I’m happy with par’.” “If you’re not controlling the ball as well as you have to, you have a lot of really, really difficult putts.” But for us, we can hit driver down there and have four iron in and not miss by much and all of a sudden it’s a tough par,” Herbert says. A bunker was also added to the front right of the green in 1957. “If you land it a foot short, it’s in the water, and a foot on, you’re begging for it to stay on the back of the green. “It’s almost worth trying to tee it up a little bit lower and hit that nice bomb draw that lands on the right side of the fairway.” Any tee shot which skews left - or even rests on the short cut on that side of the hole - makes it almost impossible to attack the green in two. “The way the green sits, it’s almost begging you to do it,” Australia’s world No.6 and Masters contender Cameron Smith says. “This year they’ve changed the shape of landing area so the ball won’t bounce forward, it will bounce left,” Baker-Finch says. He signed for a 13, tied for the highest score on a single hole in Masters history. I felt like I hit a lot of good shots. “I feel like - I don’t know, it’s the first time in my career where I make a 13 without missing a shot,” Garcia said in reference to the procession of balls rolling down the front embankment into the water.

Expert picks, best bets and props that can't miss for the 2022 Masters (ESPN Australia)

Who can win? Whos has the best betting value? What props are the most interesting? Our experts look at the Masters from all angles.

He also has placed in the top six in each of the past three majors he has played. He was the runner-up in 2019 and finished in the top 10 in 2020. He has had a slow start to 2022 (one top 10), but that leaves a lot of value at 20-1 for a guy with T-2, T-17 and T-3 results here in the past three years. He has the experience needed to win at Augusta, having finished in the top 10 his past three starts. He skipped the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event to get ready for the Masters. Smith ranks top seven in the three most important metrics to win at Augusta -- greens in regulation, par-5 performance and putting average. Why he'll win: The biggest knock on Schauffele the past few years has been "close but no cigar" with nine top-10s in majors and a runner-up at the Players on his résumé. Since we last saw Schauffele at a major, he won Olympic gold and helped Team USA to a Ryder Cup win, going 3-1. He has won three times -- the first three of his career -- in the past eight weeks. Scheffler has everything it takes to win at the Masters this year: The distance off the tee, the touch on the greens and a seemingly unflappable demeanor that can get him through the ups and downs. It might not be possible to pass Tiger, but I think it takes that mentality to win at the highest level and it feels like he's going to break through soon. Why he'll win: Smith is coming off a win at the Players and has contended in three out of the past four Masters, including a runner-up finish in 2020. Why he'll win: Always judge the overall talent and who has the hot hand. A winner at the WM Phoenix Open, Bay Invitational and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, he has the confidence needed going to Augusta National. Golf right now belongs to Scottie Scheffler.

Who will win the Masters 2022? Predictions, latest odds and why ... (iNews)

A life-threatening car accident has only added to the mind-boggling, mythical status of Woods - if he believes he can triumph again, nobody should write him ...

The twirl of the club and characteristic swoop to recover his tee, betrayed the satisfaction Woods felt with his drive. After stopping a moment to repair his pitch mark Woods stood over the ball and sent it along a gently curving arc into the centre of the cup. From the middle of the 18th fairway Woods sent his approach to eight feet, detonating a Sunday-like vibe around the green. The flight of the ball was lost in the pewter canopy of low cloud. The rain washed the petals from the dogwoods and rhododendrons, stripping temporarily the manicured borders of their sheen. He never loses because of the superiority of others, only when his own agency fails to reach the required standard. The victory and the defeats are thus determined by him. Woods was out in the first tee slot of the day, 8am. It was a picture of Masters content, the dominant figure of the past 25 years weaving another remarkable fable. They wanted to see the big guy, and they saw him, and they saw good golf. The test is authentic, the spectacle unique. Our friend looked as if he had stepped out of a dream only to realise he wasn’t dreaming.

The Tiger is back in Masters town where illusion and mystery rule (The Guardian)

The lives of Augusta and Tiger Woods are perfectly choreographed – the rest of us guess where the mirage begins and ends.

The scale of gallery attention on the duo even during buildup work here has to be a distraction. It has been widely forgotten that Bubba Watson, who has shown glimpses of a return to form, is a two-time Masters champion. If nothing else, the past few days have served as a reminder of how much this sport will miss him – and his layers of intrigue – when he is gone. Thomas may also reach the point where being in the company of Woods so often becomes exhausting. If come Sunday evening the man pulled from a mangled SUV on a sunny Californian morning is even in the frame for the Masters the latest chapter in a life story that would be discarded by fiction editors will have been penned. Yet McIlroy must take hope that so many of the principle protagonists are in questionable touch. Woods signed off from pre-tournament practice on Wednesday morning with a drive floated into the middle of the 18th fairway. Eight of the top 10 players in the world are aged 30 or under. Others in this field are of the mind that the 15-time major winner will play well. On testing by a bold journalist in 1996, it was discovered the immaculate blue ponds at Augusta National are produced with the assistance of food dye. The same individual, with a straight face, said this week that he thinks he can win the Masters. Fred Ridley, the club chairman, was asked on Wednesday to mark the 10th anniversary of women being afforded membership by confirming some numbers.

2022 US Masters preview: The course, the Tiger, the Aussies and ... (The Roar)

In the wee hours of Friday morning (AEST), the 86th US Masters will tee off at the most magnificent and magical place in world…

After more than a year out of the game recovering from the serious injuries sustained in his February 2021 car crash, golf’s greatest-ever player is on the Augusta grounds and apparently determined to play. Six Australians will grace the sacred fairways, with Players Champion Cameron Smith and his freakish abilities on the greens certain to make him our best hope. Augusta National has a racist, sexist and discriminatory past, yet has done far better at moving with a changing and more accountable world over the last 40 years than many. The tournament’s organisers insisted on making the Masters something more magical and beyond any regular PGA tour experience. The Masters has truly 'barbaric' rules unlike anything else in sport ... (Fox Sports)

The Masters has truly 'barbaric' rules unlike anything else in sport — but there's a sweet twist.

Cookies - $1.50 Peanuts - $1.50 Chips - $1.50 “Yes, the rules seem overly restrictive and draconian,” said the insider. Chicken Biscuit - $1.50 If you find the club’s quirks and customs to your liking, don’t bother asking for an application to join. Pimento Cheese - $1.50 Later, he told Golf Digest magazine that he hadn’t been paid for the stunt and had only done it because he thought “it would be cool for fans to know what ball my dad was teeing off with.” Meanwhile, in 2012, Alan Shipnuck, the esteemed golf writer and biographer of Phil Mickelson, wandered into Augusta’s Butler Cabin as new champion Bubba Watson was being presented with his green jacket. One of Augusta’s legendary pimento cheese sandwiches, for instance, costs just $1.50 while a beer will set you back $5 (although that’s gone up $1 since last year). He was banned by organisers from working the Masters and has never been asked back. No beepers, either, should you be visiting from the year 1992.

Masters normality makes welcome return to a rejigged Augusta (The Guardian)

The 11th and 15th have been changed to offer balance between risk and reward but the 13th remains toothless.

“I hope that he would feel that we continue to carry the tradition and values we thought were so important in the game.” The club have always caught between the old and the new, the desire to do right by the traditions, and to keep improving, too. “So that probably has been a counter to doing anything.” The club’s co-founder Bobby Jones loved that hole, which he said offers players “a tempting and dangerous” decision about whether to bend the tee-shot around the corner so they can reach the green in two. The players hit it so long off the tee they are left with a short iron into the green. They often tinker with the course, but these changes are a little more drastic than usual, the idea, as always, is to make sure it is still a course that offers the right balance between risk and reward.

From a green jacket to prison overalls: Masters champion's stunning ... (Fox Sports)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — His picture is still on the wall of champions in the press building at Augusta National, sandwiched between Trevor Immelman and Phil ...

“He really wanted to get better and he saw everybody had a coach so he asked me to help him,” Epps said. Abandoned by his parents, he became a caddie at the age of 8 to earn enough money to eat and it wasn’t long before he took up the game himself. Prosecutors are also looking at allegations from two other woman, including the mother of his children, and his lawyer says there’s a chance he could be charged with more crimes. “He never had a sports psychologist or anything like that and he grew up with a chip on his shoulder. He is not scheduled to be released from prison until next January at the earliest, despite his pleas of innocence. A huge crowd greeted him when he flew home after winning the 2007 U.S. Open and there was a parade in his honour.
