It had the release date (April 22). It even had the tagline: “Conquer your fate.” A Twitter page by the name of Another Film Nerd ( @Anotherfilmnerd) pointed out that on the cover of the DVD, there’s a suspicious-looking critic quote that reads, “‘An absolute blast from start to finish’ – Critic Name, Publication.” It had the film’s stars (Alexander Skarsgärd, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy and Ethan Hawke) standing proudly in a row.

'The Northman' First Reactions Call Robert Eggers' Viking Movie ... (Showbiz Cheat Sheet)

First reactions are coming in for 'The Northman', the new movie from Robert Eggers. See what critics are saying about Eggers' latest film.

Both The Witch and The Lighthouse are horror films that don’t fully explain everything and force the audience to think about what’s happening. The endings are open-ended, allowing the audience to imagine what happens next. The Northman has been trending on Twitter as critics begin to share their first reactions to the film. The review embargo is still in place, meaning that critics are only sharing their brief thoughts. The first reactions from critics are out, and many call it visually stunning and extremely brutal. Fans of the director have been anticipating his next film, and early feedback is beginning to trickle in.

The phrase “they just don’t make them like they use to” is overused when it comes to talking about modern films, but with this ghastly revenge thriller, we can make an exception. It is an extremely effective tracking shot that makes us feel like we are charging into battle with this Viking army. The contents of the 55-second clip titled “To Valholl" is pretty straightforward as it follows Alexander Skarsgård’s Amleth leading his crew into battle in a foggy forest.

Get Ready for The Northman, the Epic Viking Thriller Without a ... (Gizmodo Australia)

The Northman could be the flick Game of Thrones fans have been waiting for. This is going to be one epic Viking thriller.

“I was exhausted, and I think you see it in the shot. Filming for The Northman was scheduled for March 2020, but COVID-19 had other plans. Due to (obviously) that whole pandemic thing, The Northman in November had its release date pushed, meaning we now have to wait until April 21, 2022, to sink our teeth into what can only be described as an epic Viking thriller. The Northman is a co-production of Focus Features and New Regency. “A lot of stuff that I might have said yes to a couple of years ago, I’m just not that keen on doing anymore. I was a wreck. It was missing the title of the darn movie. “It’s basically the story of Hamlet or The Lion King … We’ve told it in our own way,” EW quoted Eggers as saying. Epic viking thriller The Northman is on its way to cinemas around the world this month. “I will avenge you, father. The posters have since been removed. the posters were missing one crucial bit of information.

See it on the biggest screen.pic.twitter.com/1bZGmjnQ7m— edgarwright (@edgarwright) April 6, 2022 Was thrilled to totally immerse myself in the blood and lava flows of THE NORTHMAN last night. It’s a crying shame that THE NORTHMAN has been so criminally mishandled because it’s precisely what blockbuster cinema should aspire to, and still has the potential to be. It's formally daring, brutal, neck-choppingly viscious, visceral, slathered in blood, dunked in lava, and boasts all of the intrigue of a Jacobean epic — all while remaining an accessible affair. A Viking revenge story with many a devilish twist, The Northman is fresh, challenging, engaging, and stunningly rendered. Less than a week after the release of Morbius, a dismal testament to the present state of Hollywood filmmaking, comes the premiere of a shining studio feature markedly antithetical to said current default.

Will audiences buy into The Northman's Viking epic? (Euronews)

Ahead of the release of Robert Eggers' The Northman, we ask why Vikings have never seemed to make that big of a dent in Hollywood.

Originally based on a Michael Crichton book, the writer was brought in to do reshoots in an attempt to get the film working. “After my small role in The 13th Warrior, I said to myself, 'Let us stop this nonsense, these meal tickets that we do because it pays well.' I thought, 'Unless I find a stupendous film that I love and that makes me want to leave home to do, I will stop.' Bad pictures are very humiliating, I was really sick. “The 13th Warrior” will go down in history as one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. Critics enjoyed it, but it barely made a dent on audiences, unlike Winding Refn’s next film, the massively successful and contemporary-set “Drive”. Speaking to the New Yorker, Eggers said of the film: “We had kind of an expensive, arty - but commercial - but arty, but commercial, like, Viking movie… Following Amleth (the Nordic Hamlet), Eggers’ tale has the $90 million budget of a Gladiator rival.
