Ferrero International S.A. is recalling more of its Kinder chocolate eggs just before the Easter holidays, citing a link to salmonella outbreaks in a number of European countries.

Ferrero includes Kinder Mini Eggs and Kinder Egg Hunt Kits in its recall due to risk of salmonella contamination.

Dr Lesley Larkin of the Health Security Agency said: "Symptoms of salmonellosis typically resolve themselves within a few days. It is really important that consumers follow this advice to avoid the risk of becoming ill with salmonella poisoning," she said. No other Ferrero and Kinder products are affected by this voluntary recall," the company said.

A recall on certain Kinder chocolate items linked to an outbreak of salmonella in Europe and the U.K. has been expanded to Canada.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said Wednesday the chocolate products were identified “as the likely route of infection” in an outbreak involving 134 children mainly under 10 years of age, several of whom have been hospitalized. A recall of certain Kinder brand chocolate products linked to an outbreak of salmonella in Europe and the U.K. has been expanded to Canada. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
