Buckingham Palace Tried to Block Photography of Prince Andrew ... (Daily Beast)

The official photographer was initially told he wasn't allowed to take photos of the queen arriving on Andrew's arm.

This would have meant there would have been no still photographs of the queen and Andrew as she walked to her seat, despite the entire service being screened live on TV. The queen is said to have underwritten part of the settlement from her personal fortune. The decision by the queen to ask Andrew to accompany her into the service was hugely controversial as Andrew has recently settled a court case with a woman who accused him of sexually assaulting her.

Queen of the con: why the Melissa Caddick mystery captivates me ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

The fraudster's brazen theft of millions from those closest to her has driven me to find answers in a new podcast: Liar, Liar.

That was my mum and dad’s money. But it wasn’t until my story, “ con artist of the century”, that her investors realised they were victims. Until then, they had been led to believe there was a problem with one disgruntled investor and that it would soon be sorted. Within hours of the AFP and ASIC raiding her Wallangra Road home in Dover Heights, Melissa Caddick vanished. Each month she sent her investors a statement purporting to be from online broker CommSec. Genuine accounts had eight-digit numbers. There was nothing on Facebook or Instagram. I learned she had recently closed her social media accounts. I was investigating a potential insider trading matter which had led to a raid on a prominent businessman’s home. It wasn’t clear why the corporate regulator was interested in her. And it was such a good story to talk about with people. As one psychiatrist told us, narcissists like Caddick “think they’re above everyone else, and they deserve to have the royal treatment. Everyone wanted me to dissect their theories and ask if I had inside knowledge about who kidnapped her, where she was hiding or who might have murdered her. There were the couture clothes, shoes, designer handbags, and jewels worth millions of dollars.

OK, so while we, the public, might view him with lip-curling contempt, he is still her child. Where he reportedly told her how smashingly the whole thing had gone. When it came to photography close to where the royal family sat, each news outlet nominates one person and then one name is picked at random by an independent body. But that’s not the point. “The palace officials stood firm, no pictures until she was seated. The reason lies in when he was born. When Her Majesty had son Prince Charles a year after marrying Prince Philip she was 22-years-old and then when she promptly produced Princess Anne two years later she was only 24.

Prince Philip's memorial service was important to Queen Elizabeth — and she was heavily involved in its planning.

"It shows she wholeheartedly loves and believes her son," royal commentator Robert Jobson told People. "She has faith in Andrew. Even if he disappears from public life, he's been able to pay tribute to his father, who after all, was very proud of his service in the Royal Navy, where he fought in the Falkland Islands conflict." While the queen had already been seen walking with a cane, there were also reports that she was wheelchair-bound and would not want to be photographed in a frail state. Although Prince Philip's memorial service was important to Queen Elizabeth — and she was heavily involved in its planning — it wasn't clear whether or not her majesty would be able to attend the event due to concerns regarding her health.

“Marilyn made a point of adopting some of the Queen’s favourite brands, buying gloves from Cornelia James, perfume from Floris, and switching from Chanel No. 5 to Yardley’s Lavender. Marilyn made a point of asking the film’s PR manager to add a royal meeting to her schedule, but each day Olivier would delete the request.” Much was written about Marilyn Monroe’s dress at the Royal Film Performance—a gold lame evening gown with spaghetti straps a slinky skirt—and how uncouth it was to wear in front of The Queen. It has since gone up for auction and remains, like the white dress worn in The Seven Year Itch or the hot pink gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, an iconic part of the star’s wardrobe. Queen Elizabeth II has welcomed a dozen Prime Ministers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; she’s met nearly every American President of her reign; she meets the movers and the shakers of the arts, politics, science worlds—but has there been a more iconic meeting than when The Queen met Marilyn Monroe, the queen of mid-century Hollywood?
