Louis C.K. Wins a Grammy for His Comedy Album About Cancellation (Vanity Fair)

Nearly five years after admitting to sexual misconduct, the comedian won best comedy album at the 2022 Grammys.

But by 2018, he returned to the stage with a handful of sets at New York City’s Comedy Cellar. In August 2021, C.K. announced a nationwide comedy tour. I learned how to eat alone in a restaurant with people giving me the finger from across the room.” Anybody else get in global amounts of trouble?” adding, “I learned a lot. At the time, C.K. released a statement, saying, “These stories are true. It was C.K.’s third win in this category—following victories in 2012 and 2016. Louis C. K.’s post-“cancellation” road is apparently paved in gold.

Those who claimed to be “canceled” continue to do pretty well for themselves, albeit in slightly different circles now. Put simply, being “canceled” doesn’t actually happen. Guest Column: Blame Louis C.K.'s Grammy Comeback on Comedy's ... (Hollywood Reporter)

"The message this award sends to C.K.'s victims and other female comics and comedy writers is that their cries will fall on deaf ears – and might well backfire, ...

When I sat across Louis C. K. at the Comedy Cellar, I thought to myself, “This guy has two daughters.” His lack of empathy is pretty jarring if that alone doesn’t open his eyes. But when I think about how the world he works in – the world that supports and nurtures him – carries that same lack of empathy, then it makes sense. The message this award sends to C. K.’s victims and other female comics and comedy writers is that their cries will fall on deaf ears – and might well backfire. The comedy establishment sends a dog whistle to sexual predators, forgiving their abusive actions as long as they offer a superficial apology (often drafted by their publicists) and go underground for year or so. His unwilling audience members, who were less powerful colleagues in the industry, spoke out about his sexual misconduct and several felt that their comedy careers were stymied by his protectors as a direct consequence. I was in New York City for the NY Comedy Festival when I was invited by a comedian friend to the Comedy Cellar. Being invited was the only way I could have gotten in. It’s a club of people – male and female – who favor boys. It started to come together: The boys’ club isn’t a club of boys. As a female comedian who’s experienced her share of misogyny and sexual harassment in this business, I cannot imagine how Louis C. K.’s victims must be feeling at this moment. It had no shortage of great and famous comedians to put onstage and put butts in seats. I thought, “How is this guy allowed at the club after his five finger shuffle in front of unsuspecting innocent women?” After all, this was a prestigious comedy club. And yet I was surprised to learn that the booker of the club was a woman.

The mechanics of how entertainers and their industry work and celebrate following cases of misconduct such as this is a conversation that needs to be had.But it is the victims who deserve the most seats at the table, and the loudest voices in the conversation. Post continues after podcast. They promoted a debate around bodies such as The Recording Academy, and their right to maintain their own rules and hand out statutes based on performance, rather than a public profile. And in many ways, there was a debate about fans themselves, and the power they hold in the cancellation of celebrities along with their right to either support or turn away from their favourite artists in light of their actions off stage. But where our thoughts should have turned is towards those five women, who all put their own lives, careers, personal safety, and mental health on the line to speak out against a man in their industry they had long admired. The 2002 Grammys prompted a debate about the rights of Louis C.K. His right to continue his career, and receive industry awards in the wake of these allegations being proven true. A man who abused his power in a series of sexual misconducts that will be forever seared into the minds of these women.I can only imagine how they must have felt when word reached their ears that the man who had violated them had just had his name read out from a winner's ballot during one of the entertainment industry's most prestigious events. All while celebrities and power players sat in the audience and politely clapped.A situation made all the more damaging thanks to the fact that the Grammy Award-winning album in question contained comedy content based on the impact of the personal stories they had shared. In the article, she describes working in production at The Chris Rock Show in the '90s, where Louis C.K., a writer and producer on the show, repeatedly asked her to watch him masturbate. It was a moment that hardly constituted a hiccup in the night's glitzy proceedings, with the only true nod to the confronting nature of the win being the moment presenter and actor LeVar Burton said, “Damn...I will accept this on his behalf,” before he swiftly left the stage. But while all appeared well at the awards ceremony, which Louis C.K. did not attend and has yet to acknowledge, his win ignited a firestorm of debate that raged across social media, in newsrooms, and in group chats about what the accolade really meant for the man who had been 'cancelled' in 2017.Watch: The women who worked for Harvey Weinstein tell their stories. “We won’t restrict the people who can submit their material for consideration," Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement provided to The Wrap. "We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria." Louis C.K. was certainly not the only name who should never have appeared on that winner's list last night, and he definitely won't be the last. But while the conversation around his win rages on - fuelled by a larger debate around the problematic nature of men still being celebrated in the public eye following misconduct and convictions, and who polices that - there are some important voices that have been forgotten in all the noise.Namely, the group of women who first came forward with allegations against Louis C.K. in the 2017 The New York Times exposé 'Louis C.K. Is Accused by 5 Women of Sexual Misconduct'.Women such as Chicago comedy duo Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov, who in 2002 thought they had landed their big break when given the chance to perform at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Colorado. After their show Louis C.K. invited them to his hotel room for a drink. Rebecca Corry, who appeared with Louis C.K. on a television pilot in 2005, said he requested to masturbate in front of her. It's a moment that still haunts her to this day, but it was also a job she considered her big break and he was a famed star. Post continues after video. On one hand, people argued Louis C.K. has no formal charges or arrests made against him that would prevent him from working and participating in industry events. The Recording Academy, the body of musicians, producers, recording engineers, and other musical professionals who are responsible for the Grammy Awards, have staunchly maintained that C.K. has every right to remain eligible for, and even win, their awards. Even when the man in question admits they are all true. After all, Louis C.K. was back on the stand-up comedy circuit less than a year after the first wave of allegations against him were confirmed. This article deals with sexual misconduct and might be triggering for some readers. When the winner for Best Comedy Album was announced at the 2022 Grammy Awards, you could sense a brief uncomfortable energy shift in that room packed with perfectly quaffed celebrities. This was because Louis C.K. had won the comedy section.

It's natural to feel a flare of disgust when a disgraced man is given a shot at a professional comeback — and there's no doubt that was the reaction of many ...

The first part of setting new norms is the easiest: Of course it was wrong for C.K. to masturbate in front of fledgling female comics, or for the producer Harvey Weinstein to use his studio to prey on victims. It’s a sign that the reckoning, in this case, has stuck. The risk — of sexual harassment lawsuits, of horrible publicity, of sinking money into a project that can’t ultimately be released — is probably still too high. Louis C.K.’s Grammy isn’t a defeat for the #MeToo movement. His professional community can recognize the excellence of his art while still expressing moral disapproval of the artist who created it. And he gets to keep the money. Some of the women didn’t believe the request was serious until C.K. began to disrobe. His only acting role in the past five years was in a French-language miniseries, “ La meilleure version de moi-même,” starring his girlfriend, Blanche Gardin. C.K. seemed to believe that because — at least in some cases — he’d asked permission, it was above board for him to go below the belt. And while C.K. began booking live shows again a few years later, the covid-19 pandemic put a full-fledged comeback on hold. After the Times story, the distributor for C.K.’s feature film canceled its release. And he certainly isn’t getting to make new TV shows or direct feature films.

The comedian and TV creator, who admitted to sexual misconduct back in 2017, controversially won a Grammy award at the weekend. The incident has raised ...

It doesn’t mean that his work is necessarily any less meaningful, that we are not able to watch it and discover more about the world, more about ourselves, as we do with any worthwhile piece of art. But it does seem to invite a collective evaluation of how exactly we judge the work of someone like CK. It is easy for us to ignore the latest work from Woody Allen, so piss-poor has he been for decades – a boycott has all the dolour of giving up bee stings, or back-alley acupuncture, for Lent. CK was a major artist in his prime, and the fact that he has behaved terribly off-screen doesn’t make his work any less influential. Since his misconduct came to light fully in 2017, public perception has tended to perpetuate the idea that his pre-disgrace reputation was inflated – that he was simply a lucky beneficiary of an industry desperate to identify and idolise the next white male genius. It was thought-provoking and radically original – its vignette-y, avant-garde approach to storytelling was unlike anything previously seen on TV. A whole host of the best TV shows of the past five years, from Atlanta to Ramy, to the CK-produced Better Things, owe it a huge formal and aesthetic debt. The incident has raised wider questions about the divide between art and artist, writes Louis Chilton – but there’s not going to be an easy answer But there is more to the issue than just this.
