Labor flags further cost of living support if elected and attacks ... (The Guardian)

Shadow treasurer says a Labor government would 'reorient' budget as RBA warns of mounting fuel and commodity prices.

“There is a task to deal with the stupendous waste and rorts that we’ve seen in the budget. “If it’s not the time to flick a switch to austerity, it is the time to flick a switch to quality.” “I’m very pleased to see already what we thought might even take a bit longer than this, that we’re seeing that cost of living relief flow through to Australian families, for individuals as they’re going off to work, getting around the city and ensuring that they can get that cost of living relief now,” Morrison said. Chalmers said that if Labor formed government it would have the opportunity to “reorient” the budget before the end of the year, and said it would consider the economic circumstances at the time as it assessed extending support for cost of living pressures. “We’ve said it’s hard to imagine a world where the cash handouts in the current budget will continue indefinitely, and that’s just been upfront about the pressures in the budget,” he said. The pledge to assess cost of living pressures comes as the reserve bank warned on Tuesday that inflationary pressures would continue to mount “over coming quarters”, arising from higher petrol and commodity prices.

Tax caps are all politics and bad economics: Chalmers (The Australian Financial Review)

The government says Labor cannot be trusted to keep its no new taxes promises after Jim Chalmers rejected adopting a tax cap.

“Pro-business, pro-employer”: Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers ... (SmartCompany.com.au)

Speaking at the National Press Club on Tuesday, Chalmers reiterated the economic policy positions Labor will bring to the upcoming election.

“Working people need a government which fights for them and supports businesses by keeping money in the pockets of working people who can spend it.” The speech was notably different in tone from 2019’s election campaign, which a party post-mortem said was harmed by “anti-business rhetoric” and “derogatory references to ‘the big end of town'”. A Labor government would also see small businesses “get a bigger slice of the action when it comes to government [procurement]”, Chalmers said, adding to a prior Labor promise to cap invoice payment times if elected.

More APS jobs and fewer consultants: Labor (The Mandarin)

Shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers said the nation could save billions of dollars if the growing push to engage private contractors in the APS were reviewed.

He said a Labor government would deliver the “right kind of growth” and invest to create more jobs. “If it’s not the time to flick a switch to austerity, it is the time to flick a switch to quality, to smart investments in the future,” Chalmers said. “More in terms of capacity, less in terms of spending on contractors and consultants.”
