World Cup Draw Time, TV and Rules (The New York Times)

The hard work of qualifying is over. Now the teams headed to Qatar later this year will learn their opponents.

What Would Qualify as Success? Serbia has never made it beyond the group stage as Serbia, so that will be the first target. The presence of Spain and Germany makes that a touch less likely. What to Expect The problem for Japan, as it has been for countless previous tournaments, is goals. But as the World Cup draws closer, that absence of varied competition leads to a sense of ignorance. If things go to form, France, England, Portugal, Belgium and one of Spain and Germany are all on one side of the draw. But the group stage draw is not really a draw just for the group stage: It is a road map for the entire tournament, too. Group H is an appetizing one, and perhaps the most finely balanced of all eight. After all the pomp and the circumstance, the video montages and the marketing spiel dressed up as mission statements, all you can say with any certainty is that it will, when it comes, be colorful. Brazil, as it happens, is in much the same boat. Japan will be no pushover, and whichever of Costa Rica or New Zealand fills out the group will hardly be content to go quietly. Senegal, the most complete team Africa has sent to a tournament for more than a decade, may lie in wait in the last 16. Louis van Gaal said it all with just the hint of a playful smile.

1 1 This group could be potentially the most bonkers of the entire tournament. Two teams with a bone to pick with the USA on the pitch. Right off the bat, the most enjoyable part of this collection is that the eventual Pot 4 European playoff participant has a realistic shot to escape the group and cause knockout round chaos. For example, the intercontinental playoff involving AFC (Australia/UAE) and CONMEBOL (Peru) cannot be drawn into a group with either an Asian or South American team already present.

Scotland and Ukraine will face off in June, before the winner faces Wales one week later. Some of the boys that were there in 2018 would like revenge and I am pretty sure that they will all be excited.” And finally, the war in Ukraine delayed the play-offs for the final European spot. For the final group stage matches and the knockouts, matches will take place at 2am and 6am AEDT. Tunisia, the lowest-ranked team from Pot 3, replaces at least one of those former two nations this time. The opening match of the World Cup will pit Group A’s Qatar against Ecuador, with Senegal and Netherlands fancying their chances of making it out of that quartet.

Coach John Herdman will be out to make his own piece of history, as he becomes the first person to lead a team at both the women’s and men’s World Cup. Despite his advancing years, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric remains a superb player and the talisman. With players of the standard of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku, they could take some stopping. The four teams selected into the group will play a round-robin format with each nation facing the other three. Morocco fills the other spot in Group F, looking to fly the flag for Africa once again after gaining a credible 2-2 draw against Spain at Russia 2018. If teams are also tied in those categories another set of tiebreakers is applied.

The 32 nations who will be competing in this year's World Cup in Qatar will learn their group matchups on Friday. Here's how you can follow the draw.

Costa Rica will take on New Zealand in one intercontiental playoff, and Peru will face the winner of the United Arab Emirates versus Australia in the other. Those matches will take place in June. The other three groups each get one European team. That means they'll be part of Pot 2 as the eight groups for the tournament — held Nov. 21 to Dec. 18 in Qatar — are drawn from four pots based on their current rankings. In each of the four pots (of eight teams each), one team will be drawn and placed into groups A through H. Europe has 13 teams in the tournament and five of the eight groups will each get two teams from the continent.

Also, since the World Cup Draw is moving forward without knowing the final three berths (they take place in June), then there will be placeholders for them and all three were placed in Pot 4. Qatar will also automatically be playing in Group A, occupying the slot of A1 in that group. It will be a very different dynamic for players, who have been accustomed to going right into a World Cup camp in May after a long European season. The 29 qualified teams and three playoff placeholders were sorted into four pots (Pot 1-4) prior to the draw based on their FIFA world rankings. The next country drawn would go back and fill in the group that was bypassed. That's why every four years the World Cup Draw continues to attract the fascination of millions around the world and will be met with dramatic (over)reaction by fans everywhere. The group that is skipped over will be filled by the next team drawn. If there's a geographic clash, the team drawn is simply moved to the next group in sequence. It determines the sequence of matches, making it important that it's randomly selected. Each pot is emptied before moving on to the next one. There will be talk of Groups of Death and lucky draws. The chatter will surround which teams can go deep, which teams can advance from their group, and which will crash out.

Final qualifiers are still wrapping up, leaving a few spots left in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but that's not stopping the ball rolling on the tournament.

Brazil would go on to win the World Cup. The term originated during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico as a way to refer to the horrific Group C, which saw Brazil, England, Romania and Czechoslovakia put together. * Italy failed to qualify for the second straight World Cup. It’s an extremely unusual World Cup that won’t kick off until November 21 due to concerns about heat in the Persian Gulf, which routinely tops 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and would be hazardous for players. Friday marks the announcement of the draw for group stages, with 32 teams, including host nation Qatar, all finding out their fates. Teams were arranged into four pots, and then selected by random draw.

Portugal was the final team into Pot 1 but looks to have its hands full with Ghana coming out of Pot 4. The pairings are quite uncanny considering that Brazil, Serbia and Switzerland also shared a group in 2018. This is already turning out to be one of the most formidable groups, and a clear potential Group of Death candidate. Four of the last five champions haven’t gotten out of the group in their title defenses. And while it’s not Serbia or Senegal, Japan could arguably be one of the tougher Pot 3 teams. The bad news is that a potential matchup with Wales, ranked 18th in the FIFA world rankings, waits in the wings if Gareth Bale & Co. can win its June playoff.

They've also reached four finals and finished third place three times on top of that too, making them an elite international football country. One to watch out for is RB Salzburg's Karim Adeyemi, who's energy and pace has caused problems not only in Austria, but in the UEFA Champions League as well. Other players to watch include Munich's Jamal Musiala, who at 19 is a prominent squad member for club and country. Germany are still considered amongst the elite of international football.

A showdown with the old enemy, but no group of death? Simulated World Cup draw.

Could the Socceroos beat Tunisia and earn a point or two against the European sides to sneak through? But there are no severely-underseeded nations, with the possible exception of the final UEFA qualifier, who has to be placed in Pot 4 because we don’t know who they are yet. (They’re not even expecting a spot in the groups.) A pretty even group with Ecuador quite low-ranked, but the US and Japan could both realistically expect to make it out and even challenge Spain, who haven’t made it out of the round of 16 since winning the 2010 event. And strange things happen in tournaments. You’d heavily favour France and Uruguay to make it out here, with Morocco and Saudi Arabia each having made it out of the groups in just one of their five World Cup appearances.

World Cup draw: group-by-group analysis for Qatar 2022 (The Guardian)

The draw threw up political intrigue, a heavyweight European clash and one group that is particularly hard to call.

It is 20 years since Brazil were the last non-European winner of a World Cup and again they are one of perhaps two non-European sides who might realistically be considered capable of success. The biggest doubts are at the back, where Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld will have a combined age of 69 by the time the World Cup begins. No nation has anything approaching the depth of the world champions. Saudi Arabia are grimly consistent under Hervé Renard, the only coach ever to win the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries. Certainly they should have the squad for it and in Gareth Southgate they have a clear-sighted, sober leader who has shown how a supportive environment can be created; the doubt is whether he is quick enough to react tactically when games begin to slip away from his side. They did, though, win the Asian Cup under their Spanish coach, Félix Sánchez, in 2019.

History Is on Europe's Side Following Competitive 2022 World Cup ... (Sports Illustrated)

Will the Qatar edition mark the first time in 20 years that a non-European nation takes home the World Cup trophy?

Otto Addo was placed in temporary charge for that playoff and he could point with justifiable satisfaction to the way his side controlled the game even in the hostile atmosphere in Abuja. It may feel it has a point to prove against Uruguay, after the way Luis Suarez’s handball denied it at the last minute in the 2010 quarterfinal. Óscar Tabárez had been in charge for 15 years, had reshaped the entire structure of the country’s coaching and youth development, won a Copa América and led his side to a World Cup semifinal, but a sense of staleness had taken hold. Brazil won the World Cup last time it was staged in Asia. Twenty years on, it is one of probably only two sides with a realistic chance of putting a stop to the run of four straight European winners that have followed. Son Heung-min is the obvious star, but this is a side based on its defense; it conceded just three goals in those 10 group games. It went out in the group at the African Cup of Nations, and rather limped through qualifying, needing a highly questionable penalty against South Africa to top its group before an away goals win over Nigeria in the playoff. Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the best midfielders in the world, but, while there are questions about Romelu Lukaku’s form, the biggest issues are at the back where Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld will have a combined age of 68 by the time the World Cup begins. It had only ever won two matches at a World Cup stage, but one of those was against the U. S. in 1998. It faces familiar opposition in Mexico, now under a former Argentina coach in Gerardo Martino. They met in the first World Cup and they’ve met twice since, Argentina wining on all three occasions. Memories of that embarrassment and Gareth Southgate’s admirable sobriety should guard against overconfidence, as should the fact that, by world ranking, this is the toughest group. Which, of course, brings up the biggest issue of this World Cup: that it is being held in Qatar, the most controversial host since the Argentinian junta of 1978. Hosts are never easy to assess given their dearth of qualifiers, but despite that Asian Cup success in 2019, there must be concern about the string of heavy defeats to Portugal, Ireland and Serbia last autumn and a draw against Azerbaijan. South Africa, though, remains the only host to fail to make it out of the group. And that perhaps hints at a growing sense that the expansion of football seen in the 1980s and ’90s is heading into retreat, that money is beginning to dominate the international game as the major western European nations invest in youth development.

Graham Arnold's side must first beat the United Arab Emirates in the Asian play-off in Doha on June 7 and then Peru in the inter-continental play-off a week later, just to make it to the finals in November and December. New Zealand, which must also first try to win a tough inter-continental play-off against Costa Rica, has been drawn in the obligatory "group of death" with former winners Spain and Germany, as well as Japan. It will be the first World Cup held in November and December, the move from the usual June and July slot necessary because of the extreme heat in the Gulf region at that time of year. Mexico have a history at the World Cup.” Mehdi Mahdavikia, who scored Iran’s second goal, is on the Iran coaching staff. Their toughest opponents could be Mexico, whom Argentina defeated in the last 16 of both the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. “Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper, so it was worth it.” Some of the boys that were there in 2018 would like revenge and I am pretty sure that they will all be excited.” The two faced off in the 2010 Final (where Spain won 1-0 in extra time) France are the reigning World Champions while Denmark reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and are more than just dark horses this time around. Iran is focused on doing a good job at the World Cup and we are focused on the same thing,” he said after the groups were drawn in Doha. Indeed, many English pundits and fans have declared how pleased they are with their group rivals. Only twice before has a host country made its World Cup debut: Uruguay in 1930 and Italy in 1934 -- the first two World Cups ever played. And every time they have faced a South American team in the group stage, they've advanced to the knockout round: 1986, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. In the two World Cups that France have won (1998 and 2018), they were drawn into the same group as Denmark, whom Kylian Mbappe & Co. will meet in Group D. It will be the fourth time that the two countries have met in the group stage. * The United States men's national team are unbeaten in two previous meetings against England, with the Americans and Three Lions contesting Group B along with Iran and the winner of the UEFA playoff of Wales vs. Brazil (five times). Lionel Messi's record of three goals in five games against El Tri won't do much to ease Mexican nerves.
