The eight-point try extended the Panthers' lead to 20-6, before the Rabbitohs scored and converted to keep themselves in the match. Returning Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary converted the May four-pointer and made it an eight-point penalty try when he potted over his kick from straight in front. An eight-point penalty try rocked the Rabbitohs in a 26-12 loss to the Panthers, with the Bunker coming down hard on South Sydney halfback Lachlan Ilias for contact on the try-scorer.

Penrith Panthers dominate South Sydney Rabbitohs 26-12 in ... (ABC News)

Penrith fire another warning shot to the rest of the league, outclassing South Sydney 26-12 in a rematch of last year's NRL grand final.

There is nothing for the Panthers to work out. Other teams, like Manly, are still trying to work out what kind of team they will be after the tweaks to the six again rule. Melbourne are working out how to handle their middle rotation after losing Christian Welch for the season. Once Jai Arrow, who had a real crack even as things fell apart around him, goes to the middle permanently, the team will be better for it. The cliche of it being more difficult to defend a title than win one is well-worn for a very good reason. Arrogance has been a charge thrown at the Panthers over the last 12 months but that does them a disservice.

Taylan May's second try in the 49th minute was the result of quick hands by Panthers playmakers Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai to get the ball to strike second-rower Viliame Kikau but the rookie winger still had a lot of work to do himself. We're not going to be at the top end of where we want to be if we don't tidy that up": Souths coach Jason Demetriou. * May made amends just three minutes later when he scored in the corner after Viliame Kikau held up a pass near the Rabbitohs line. I thought we started pretty well and Souths came us pretty hard tonight. At the moment we're a team who is chasing when we're behind. "I thought it was a good night and good game for our community.

If I’m a Souths fan, I’m really disappointed because he still makes the play,” he said. It’s so easy to use the wrong shoulder here. “(Jaxson) Paulo was jamming in and May had plenty to do. Tallis: What if the defender just uses his outside shoulder. But the 21-year-old also conceded a penalty, made an error and had two missed tackles. We could have no decoys and it’ll be 2-2 like last night. I don’t care where you are just catch it on the full.” But he also had two errors and conceded penalty. Marshall: I understand what you’re saying but the letter of the law, and you get taught it, you can’t run to the outside shoulder as a lead runner and he did, so it’s a no try. Flanagan added: “A lot of work to do, to get his head down so close to the ground and not worry about getting kicked in the head which he eventually ended up doing, some good football.” Ilias made the score an eight-point try due to leading his cover tackle with his legs and collecting May in the head. Ilias gave away an eight-point try and was put on report in the second half for leading his cover tackle with his legs and collecting try-scorer May.

NRL Round 4 Penrith Panthers outclass South Sydney Rabbitohs in ... (ESPN Australia)

Penrith have welcomed back Nathan Cleary for his first NRL game of the season as they brushed aside South Sydney 26-12 in their Grand Ginal rematch.

To add insult to injury, Ilias left a boot on the Panthers winger as he touched down which caused referee Ashley Klein to give Penrith a penalty which Cleary converted from right in front. After Penrith trapped them in goal, the Rabbitohs took a short dropout which failed to pay off before May slid in out side on the next Panthers set to open up a comfortable buffer, with Cleary adding the extras. Luai sparked the Panthers' fast start as he skipped down the left and set up Tago for the opener before Cleary sent Crichton in untouched on the other flank.

'He spoke too much about Cleary': Panther targets Arrow after fiery ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

The bad blood between Penrith and South Sydney is set to worsen after Spencer Leniu and Jai Arrow had to be separated after full-time on Friday night.

Milne was overheard giving Penrith players plenty of lip most of the night.Souths enforcer Jai Arrow engages in a verbal exchange with the Panthers.Cleary said after the game about the bad blood between the two competition heavyweights: “The [grand final] rematch was always going to have a lot of feeling.”Souths skipper Cameron Murray added: “There’s a lot of emotion because of the short history we’ve had and the big games we’ve played against each other.”South Sydney No.7 Lachlan Ilias was charged with dangerous contact for clipping a diving Taylan May in the face with his right boot as he scored a try.The Panthers were awarded a penalty try, which gave the home side an all-important 14-point lead – more than two converted tries – early in the second half.Ilias, who impressed in just his fifth career NRL game, can escape with a $1000 fine, while May said the rookie halfback made a point of apologising to him.“He didn’t mean it, it was an accident, he said ‘sorry’, and I didn’t even feel it, probably because of all the adrenaline,” May said.Penrith are the only undefeated team after four rounds, and do not look like dropping a game any time soon. The bad blood between Penrith and South Sydney reignited after full-time on Friday night after Panthers forward Spencer Leniu and Jai Arrow had to be separated in the middle of BlueBet Stadium.Leniu refused to shake hands with the Rabbitohs firebrand and TV footage captured a fired-up Arrow dropping some expletives and pointing his finger at the young Panthers front-rower.Leniu told The Sun-Herald he regretted not shaking hands with his Souths counterpart, but was angry with him for disrespecting Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary in the media in the lead-up to the clash.“I thought he spoke too much about Cleary [during the week],” Leniu said. After losing that 2020 grand final, it gave us some ruthlessness, and we didn’t want to take a backward step with anyone.”Arrow’s run-in with Panthers back-rower Viliame Kikau in last year’s grand final was a big talking point leading into Friday’s 28-16 win by the premiers.Spencer Leniu and Jai Arrow had to be separated after full-time on Friday night.Queensland Origin forward Arrow was also happy to stir the pot about targeting Cleary in his comeback game from shoulder surgery, telling the Herald: “I’ll be trying to get at Nathan. I’m happy to run at the little fellas than head to the middle where the big boys are.”The cameras continued rolling on Leniu and Arrow as players got in between the pair, as did touchie Dave Munro. Munro was later asked by referee Ashley Klein what caused the flare-up.The Arrow and Leniu clash will be raised when the clubs meet again in round 23.Arrow and Jarome Luai were involved in a melee in the second half, while Cleary admitted to spraying centre Taane Milne after Stephen Crichton’s first-half try. ‘He spoke too much about Cleary’: Panther targets Arrow after fiery build-up to grand final rematch, register or subscribe to save articles for later.
