The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact in-person gatherings, making the prospect of a very large and famously packed event unattractive. However, in January, E3 was once again shifted from an in-person event to an online-only exhibition due to the pandemic. The video game trade show and marketing event was originally scheduled to be held in person this year.

The Summer Game Fest Twitter account, meanwhile, reassured followers that its event will kick off with a live showcase, with details to come. But it’s in line with trends around E3's dwindling relevance, as publishers move away from one singular week of hype and instead toward one-off events that happen throughout the year. “Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.”

E3 2022 is cancelled, but a comeback is planned for 2023 (PC Gamer)

There won't be an E3 in 2022. The cancellation makes 2022 just the second year in over two-and-a-half decades that an E3 has not taken place.

Excited to share that @SummerGameFest will return this June with a slate of events. Since a convention center floor wasn't expected to begin with, the only thing missing from this year's E3 compared to last year may be the letter and number. Later, he formally announced the return of the Summer Game Fest. There were also a number of other E3 adjacent streams last year that may return this June alongside the bigger conferences. The question for this year now becomes how much we'll notice E3's absence. The yearly Entertainment Software Association trade event started in 1995, and despite fluctuations in its relevance over the years (2007 was dire), it has consistently been regarded as the games industry's most important event.

E3 2022 Has Reportedly Been Cancelled (TheGamer)

Update: The ESA has confirmed the cancelation of E3 2022 but has stated that the show will return physically and digitally in 2023. Original story below.

As for why E3 has been canceled this year, the show's declining popularity could have potentially caused publishers to pull out this year, although there is one person who might be more than partially responsible. The ESRB had confirmed that E3 would go ahead digitally due to worries surrounding a new strain of Covid-19, although it now looks like the ESA has axed plans for the event entirely. A few publishers have supported the event, but many have decided that the death of E3 will be sooner rather than later.

The following year, Summer Game Fest was announced by host Geoff Keighley, kicking off in June in direct competition to where E3 would normally be taking place, and hosting its own sets of game reveals and announcements from publishers and developers throughout the world. Just like the Summer Game Fest, it was once again hosted by Geoff Keighley, and brought together dozens of publishers, big and small, to unveil their games and host interviews surrounding their new information. It takes the pressure off developers, as those operating underneath both umbrella companies now no longer have to rush to get demos ready for E3 season in June, and the companies themselves don't have to pay for travel and accommodation in California each year. Just like Nintendo in fact, Sony has also gone on to hold its own presentations, called the PlayStation State of Play. In the years following though, a series of events have culminated in E3's downfall. "Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has confirmed that E3 2022 is completely cancelled, with no digital or physical event planned.

Nothing has been confirmed just yet, but it’s also likely that major publishers – such as Microsoft and Sony – will host their own streams to showcase upcoming projects. Following E3’s cancellation, journalist Geoff Keighley announced that the Summer Game Fest will return in June 2022. However, the statement says that “E3 will return in 2023 with a reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”
