Why Duke-UNC's Final Four game could be the biggest in college ... (The Guardian)

The Blue Devils and Tar Heels play each other in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a century-long rivalry. And a storm is gathering.

So, that’s what’s at stake on Saturday: either Krzyzewski’s career will end at the hands of a North Carolina team that has already humiliated him in his final home game or he will defeat them and earn the opportunity to win one final title. This upcoming game between Duke and North Carolina is something we’ve never seen before and it’s something that we will never truly see again. Love him or hate him, and chances are it’s the latter, it’s likely he will be remembered as the greatest college basketball coach of his generation. Given that Duke and UNC have been playing one another for over a century, it’s hard to understand how they have not met in the Big Dance before. Much of this is down to the perception that the rivalry boils down to a bunch of preppy snobs facing off against scrappy regular Joes. Duke is a private institution while North Carolina is a public school. Much of that hype comes down to the blunt fact that most of the country hates the Duke basketball program.

Duke considered a total of 50,002 applications for undergraduate admissions this year, up about one percent from last year’s application pools. I think Duke will gain a particularly engaged, active and diverse group of students.”

A third rule states that teams cannot meet each other before the Elite Eight if they played three or more times in the regular season or conference tournament. The most recent coach to do so was UNC’s Bill Guthridge in 1998. Since 1920, the teams have met 257 times in regular season and conference games, but never in March Madness. In storybook fashion, the contest coincides with Krzyzewski's ceremonious exit from Duke’s program and Davis’ first year at UNC’s helm. That season, though, the Tobacco Road rivals were on opposite sides of the bracket. But in seasons like this, when one of the teams does not receive a top-four seed — UNC is an eight-seed this year — another bracketology rule comes into play: “Teams from the same conference shall not meet before the regional semifinals if they played each other twice during the regular season, to include the conference tournament.” In this case, the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils have only been in the same bracket twice in 1979 and 2004.

Duke vs. North Carolina: History, nostalgia and betting tips on the ... (ESPN Australia)

Dalen Cuff takes a look at the highly anticipated Duke-UNC NCAA Final Four matchup from a betting perspective.

While UNC is 4-0 in the tourney and 20-16-1 ATS this season, Coach K is 8-4 ATS in Final Four games (7-0 in semifinals as the favorite) dating back to his first tournament in 1986. North Carolina is playing at the fastest tempo in the tournament at 73.2 possessions per game but Duke is not afraid to run with the Tar Heels. The over/under total for the game is 151. I think we see a tight game and this historic rivalry writes a new chapter on the game's biggest stage. But on Saturday, it will become a reality in the Big Easy. A game none of us will surely ever forget, but will it be profitable? Call me sentimental, but I think Coach K is going to have his chance to ride off into the sunset with a Disney storybook ending, beating UNC and moving on to the championship game. Duke has shot the ball at a tournament best 53.8%, which is also the fifth-highest entering a Final Four since 2000. The Blue Devils have been the aggressor and dominated teams scoring 41.5 points per game in the paint (most in the tournament). Lastly, their man defense has been much better but Coach K also mixed in a zone in the second half of their Sweet 16 game against Texas Tech and Elite 8 matchup against Arkansas. That changed the rhythm of both games, allowing Duke to string together stops and score in transition. UNC). North Carolina is led by a former Tar Heel great Hubert Davis in his first season taking over the program for the Roy Williams. On Saturday night, the two storied schools will meet in the NCAA tournament for the first time in an unlikely clash in the Final Four. New Orleans has provided the backdrop to some of college basketball's most iconic Final Four games. Nevertheless, the Blue Devils enter this weekend only two wins away from their first national title since 2015. North Carolina, the greatest rivalry in college sports, has produced a plethora of iconic moments.

Duke Lacrosse Update: Stat of the Week (Lacrosse All Stars)

The handy part of how Lacrosse Reference organizes their team pages is that it lets you go beyond just high level season metrics that the NCAA tracks and look ...

So the trending is not great at the moment, but there is still time for the Blue Devils to get things on the right track. Their defense is the biggest area to focus on at the moment is absolutely what is holding them back right now. But unlike the offense which had a similar arc, the defense is at a much worse starting point. Their offense can absolutely be better, and it *should* be better, but the issues on defense need to be addressed first. At the high level, Duke sits at 13th in the country with a 57.3% Adjusted Faceoff percentage. It’s not going out on a limb to say that Duke has the lacrosse talent and coaching to turn things around and get back on track as they march through their ACC schedule in April, but it needs to happen immediately. Their raw NCAA percentage has them at 15th with 56.7%. So while their past three games are a bit down, Jake Naso has taken almost 80% of the team’s faceoffs and is sitting just under a 60% win rate personally. For reference on the graph above, most teams are in the 3-40% range, which means changes within that 10% window can have a big impact. Then you can layer in the broader lacrosse program reputation at Duke, which is that they are a team that improves throughout the season. One is the fact that their loss to Syracuse wasn’t due to some late comeback, as the Blue Devils never tied or led the game from the point where Syracuse scored the first goal. Early in the season, it was interesting to see, but not particularly useful with just a few games of sample size. But where is the silver lining?

It would have been slightly more defensible if Smith was outmanned—like in a 21–20 stall-ball loss to No. 3 Duke in 1966—but his team was ranked fourth in the country, and Duke was No. 6. The Blue Devils went on to win 47–40, but the first half was mostly the Tar Heels holding the ball and refusing to attack while Duke sat in a zone. He received stitches for a cut in the back of his head in the first half and had a cut under his left eye in the second half. North Carolina won in Cameron in February, with Smith taking issue with Cameron Crazy signs that said, “J.R. Can’t Reid,” a shot at Heels star J.R. Reid. Duke won the rematch in the Dean Dome a few weeks later. The melee in Duke’s gym eventually included police and fans, and resulted in suspensions from the ACC commissioner for the rest of the regular season from league games for Heyman, Brown and Walsh. A sophomore, Heyman had originally committed to North Carolina before switching to Duke just before enrolling in 1959, and he had been involved in an altercation the previous year when the two programs’ freshman teams played. North Carolina 83, Duke 71: This was Senior Day for JJ Redick, a player Carolina fans loved to hate, and the Devils were ranked No. 1. North Carolina 96, Duke 92, OT: This was—and arguably still is—the gold standard for miracle comebacks in college basketball. Despite trailing most of the contest, the Heels rose up in the final 10 minutes to rip the game away and ruin the Krzyzewski party. The 258th meeting of the Blue Devils and Tar Heels is their first in the NCAA tournament, and it happens to be at the Final Four, and it happens to be with legend-in-residence Mike Krzyzewski’s career on the line. Lind blocked a shot at the end of regulation, made two free throws to force a second overtime, then hit a jump shot in the final seconds to force the third OT. Duke fans hoisted Lind on their shoulders and carried him to the campus quad afterward. The Blue Devils nearly pulled the upset in Chapel Hill a week earlier, but lost a late lead when Matt Doherty hit a shot with a second left to force OT. This breakthrough win in the ACC tournament changed the equation of the rivalry. Duke 65, North Carolina 61: This win in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament completed what was, at the time, referred to as the “Triple Crown,” a three-game sweep of the season series.

Veteran college basketball coach predicts Duke, Coach K will win it all (New York Post)

Pete Gillen, who coached Providence to the Elite Eight and took Xavier and Virginia to the NCAA Tournament, is a college basketball analyst on CBS.

The ball on the ground in a playground, one little boy wants the ball and he goes for it, one little boy had to have it. As for Saint Peter’s, hats off to a small Catholic school in Jersey City, to all the players and the coaches. Duke has the best player on the court in Paolo Banchero, and the best coach. Martin is slowed by Coach K switching over in a 2-3 zone, forces up shots and only scores 12 points. Banchero is too quick and too talented for anyone in the Kansas front court, and scores inside and outside and controls the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Banchero takes over the game and scores 25 points and shows why he could be the first overall pick in the NBA draft. He adjusted to the game, he didn’t recruit the one-and-dones then all of a sudden, hey, he got the best of the one-and-dones. Villanova has to try to lull the Jayhawks to sleep and get them in a half-court game. Duke over Kansas: Jeremy Roach is a so-called weak link for Duke, but he’s been playing great in the big games. Coach K does a great job mixing up his 2-3 zone defense as a change of pace, which gets North Carolina out of sync and slows down guards Caleb Love and R.J. Davis. The Duke zone cheats to Brady Manek, the Tar Heels’ best 3-point shooter. He’s not gonna get as many shots as he usually does, but scores inside and outside. Dean Smith was the king, and then all of a sudden he had somebody there challenging his kingdom a little bit.

Hoops 'Armageddon' Is Coming And Duke, North Carolina Fans Are ... (Forbes)

The fiercest rivals in college basketball meet in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, Duke's legendary Mike Krzyzewski will be coaching his last games, ...

Duke first had to face the undefeated University of Nevada-Las Vegas, which had embarrassed the Blue Devils by 30 points in the championship the year before. The Devils then crushed Arkansas, which had cleared tournament favorite Gonzaga out of Duke’s way in a major upset two days earlier. “The assumption was that Carolina’s going to beat Kansas, but no way Duke gets past UNLV, so of course the exact opposite happened,” Sumner says. Duke wound up beating the Runnin’ Rebels for one of the most memorable wins of Krzyzewski’s career, but not before Kansas had already beaten the Tar Heels in the first semifinal. About 100 of Krzyzewski’s former players gathered for a group photo before the game. Their home court, Cameron Indoor Stadium, has a capacity of just 9,314 and every year undergraduates camp out in tents for several weeks on a field, dubbed Krzyzewskiville, to get their free student passes for the game against North Carolina. Jack Collins, a junior history and political science major and co-chair of UNC’s Carolina Fever student fan organization, was one of the lucky ones. The NCAA sets up student sections for each school, and both Duke and North Carolina held a lottery for $40 student tickets. What a wound Coach K’s last home game ripped in the hearts of Duke fans. As of Wednesday night, the cheapest ticket for the semifinals on StubHub, including fees, was $360 for a seat in the upper deck of the Superdome, the home of the New Orleans Saints football team. The team standing in the way of his competing on Monday night for an epic sixth, against the winner of the other, ho-hum-by-comparison Kansas-Villanova semifinal, is the team that has beaten him and his Blue Devils more than any other, the underdog Tar Heels, led by rookie coach Hubert Davis. Amazingly, this will be the first-ever clash in the NCAA tournament between the two teams whose mutual loathing, bred by proximity and shared basketball success, has flowed unabated for a century. Duke’s coach — he spells it Krzyzewski, pronounces it shi-SHEV-skee and mostly goes by Coach K — has decided to retire after 42 years at the school, a record 1,202 total wins, 15 conference championships and five NCAA tournament titles.

Duke vs. North Carolina Odds and Best Bet for Final Four Matchup (Sports Illustrated)

Coach Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils are four-point favorites over the Tarheels in their first ever battle in the NCAA tournament.

Both clubs are the two-highest scoring teams left in the tournament with North Carolina averaging 82.5 points per game while Duke is only slightly behind at 79.8 points per contest. Duke (80.4 ppg) and North Carolina (78.6 ppg) both rank among the top offenses in the country. One of the players who has stepped up in the tournament for Duke is Jeremy Roach, who is averaging 12.8 points and 3.8 assists per game.
