But the big surprise here is how well Sonic the Hedgehog 2 manages to tug at the heartstrings. However, for the most part, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains a really solid film, filled with likable characters, highly energized action scenes, and an endearing focus on friendship. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, on the other hand, feels like the adaptation a crew filled with Sonic fans genuinely interested in doing justice to the video game franchise wanted to make. The characters both new and old are far more likable: Sonic is given more depth, Tails and Knuckles are welcome additions to the film franchise, and Eggman is a far more entertaining villain. Sonic the Hedgehog felt like the Sonic adaptation a big Hollywood studio only interested in making a profit wanted to make. The performances are top-notch from both the voice cast and live-action cast.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Review: Struggling to run in the right direction (Stevivor)

A sequel that builds on the success of the first film but struggles to do much else · A video game adaptation that uses its source material correctly · Moments of ...

When the dialogue isn’t bogged down by quips, Sonic 2 manages to produce genuine laughs and moments of heart and soul. It feels odd and uncomfortable and completely out of place in a film about a blue hedgehog that has super speed. While Tails was teased at the end of the first film, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 gives them a proper introduction and role. Tails and Knuckles are well crafted, and their designs mirror the source material in a way that is accurate and well-crafted. While that formula worked in its predecessor, Sonic 2 struggles to get the balance right — it tries to be both a superhero film and a one about a dysfunctional family; it refuses to commit to either. Sonic and his friends journey across the Earth and that allows for fun and unique action sequences, ones that use the powers and abilities of the characters authentically and creatively. Classic Sonic characters such as Tails and Knuckles are of course brought in, but this sequel also delves deeper into the lore and details of the narrative. Voiced by Collen O’Shanussy, Tails maintains their status as the cute, loveable, and crafty fox of the Sonic universe. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 directly follows the events of its predecessor, making good on its post-credits scenes and hitting the ground running. After the surprise success of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020, the expectation for its sequel rose greatly. Sonic is one of the most recognisable gaming characters and franchises of all time. Jim Carrey returns as the evil Dr Robotnik and is even more brilliant in the role the second time around.

"It's just different scenarios, different situations," said O'Shaughnessey when asked by GamesRadar+ about how Tails in the movie compares to Tails in the game. In a recent interview, O'Shaughnessey made an interesting comparison on how Tails differs from what she has done before, calling the movie "more like a prequel" to that work. This is thanks, in part, to the fact that Colleen O'Shaughnessey provides the voice of Miles "Tails" Prower in the movie, a role she has held in animation and video games for years at this point.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Review – Here Comes Tails & Knuckles (Fortress of Solitude)

SEGA and Paramount Pictures deliver another fun adventure for the blue speedster with the latest live-action film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Looking around the theatre during the screening, it was clear to see just how much everyone was enjoying Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – from adults who attended alone to those who attended with their kids. In addition to the new characters and story in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, I loved that there are also other elements taken directly from the video game missions. It’s clear that the team attempted to bring the whole family dynamic to the film with the extended duration but created 15-20 we didn’t really need, which could have been better spent spacing out some of the more important elements between Sonic and Robotnik. And so, this week sees the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theatres, starting in limited territories. While still not the more rounded version of the character from the games, he still adds that typical Carrey-crazed comedy we all enjoy, and he doesn’t miss a beat. With only a few weeks prior to the global 2020 lockdown, SEGA and Paramount Pictures released the first Sonic the Hedgehog film.

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' review (Entertainment Focus)

Having spawned numerous games, cartoons, and comics, it's only right that everyone's favourite hedgehog takes Hollywood by storm too. This sequel follows nicely ...

And don’t rule out a ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ either – fans should stay for the end credits for a brief teaser glimpse at what’s coming up! ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ is a fun family adventure that’s perfect for retro gamers and new fans alike. Ben Schwartz returns to voice Sonic and he’s a joy to watch. Again, I’d have liked to have seen Carrey used a bit more in this second film. After pulling close to $320 million at the worldwide box office in 2020 just before the pandemic hit, it was no surprise to see a sequel to ‘ Sonic the Hedgehog‘ was greenlit so quickly. Anyone who stayed until the end credits of the first film will know that this time around, Sonic (‘Parks and Recreation’s Ben Schwartz) will be joined by his iconic pal Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) to take on Jim Carrey’s scene stealing Dr Robotnik once again.

I was also able to have a very serious conversation about the legendary Nintendo game Contra. Do you remember the cheat code for that game that got you 30 guys?

Fun movie. Fun guys. Did the makers of the game realize they made a mistake by initially only giving you three guys to win the game?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review: Idris Elba voices an oddly sensual ... (The Independent)

Dir: Jeff Fowler. Starring: James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey. 15, 122 minutes.

But at no point here – or during the last film – does it feel like anyone actually figured out how Sonic works as the centre of a live-action movie. Neither does the film know what to do with Carrey. He stands around trying to turn bits of exposition into jokes by gurning and over-enunciating every line. He’s arrived from who-knows-where, and is apparently more of a child than Sonic, leading Sonic to step up as an incidental father figure. Knuckles and Dr Robotnik join forces to locate the Master Emerald, which allows its wielder to conjure anything the mind imagines – it gets compared in the film to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters, but really sounds a whole lot like the Green Lantern’s powers. And although the final product was essentially just a riff on the live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks, it appealed enough to audiences (or, more likely, children in the audience) that it made more than $300m (£228m) at the global box office. Returning director Jeff Fowler and Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, clearly have a lot of affection for the character – that’s understandable, since many people dedicated a good chunk of their childhoods to making that tiny creature do loop-de-loops on their Sega Genesis consoles.

He has played Heimdall, a close ally of Thor in five films in the Marvel franchise, and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad. Tails is Sonic’s sidekick in the Sonic video games and when in flight can actually keep pace with the hedgehog. O’Shanussy voiced Tails, a fox with two tails who also happens to be a pilot, briefly in a mid-credits scene in the first Sonic movie, but has also voiced the character in the video games since 2014. Schwartz will return to lend his voice to the CGI hedgehog and hero of the piece. The sequel will find Dr Robotnik returning to earth with a new ally in tow, ready to wreak revenge on Sonic and his friends. Who is in the Sonic 2 cast?
