A missing chopper that vanished with five people on board has been found at Victoria's Mount Disappointment.

Mr Mitchell said a preliminary report about the crash is expected to be published in six to eight weeks, with a final report to be released once the investigation is finished. It is unknown if there are any survivors. It is understood the helicopter took off from Moorabbin Airport in Melbourne’s south-east and stopped at the Melbourne City Helipad to collect passengers before heading north.

Police are searching the wreckage of a helicopter which was part of a private charter that crashed at Mount Disappointment, north of Melbourne, with five people on board.

In 1944, two Royal Australian Air Force dive bombers crashed into the side of the mountain which was obscured by a low-hanging cloud, killing five people. Police rescuers were winched in to dense bushland after police located the crash site using infrared technology on Thursday morning. Members of the Country Fire Authority are also on scene. Crews have lit a fire to keep warm as temperatures in the heavily wooded area dropped on Thursday afternoon. Two bulldozers and an excavator were working to gain access to the crash site, clearing trees from the difficult terrain about eight kilometres from the hut. Get it here. Rescuers were winched in to assess the site but by Thursday evening it was still not known whether any of the people on board the helicopter survived the crash.

The wreckage was able to be viewed from above on Friday and a large blue tarp was covering the site. “It could have possibly been an engine failure, but again, the helicopter has a great safety record and the company does as well, so I think they’re going to zero in on the weather as being a contributing factor to this terrible tragedy.” The cause of the crash is not yet known and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will send a team from Canberra and Melbourne on Friday to take over the investigation.

Inverloch entrepreneur Linda Woodford, 50, was remembered by friends as a “high-flyer who wanted to make a difference in the world” after being named as one of the victims of Thursday’s crash.
