Rolex's Biggest Release of 2022 Is… (GQ Magazine)

This is despite the fact that Rolex moves at a glacial pace, tweaking sizes or swapping out bracelets and occasionally resurfacing old models. But this year, ...

Practical for lefties and great for the rest of us looking for a more distinctive case layout. The crown and the date window have both been flipped to the left side of the case. There’s the black-and-blue Batman, plus a whole soda aisle in the red-and-black Coke, the red-and-blue Pepsi, and the brown-and-black Root Beer. Today, as part of the industry trade show Watches & Wonders, Rolex is showing off a new GMT with a brand new color combination: green and black.

Rolex Releases The Yacht-Master 42 Watch With Yellow Gold And ... (aBlogtoWatch)

In 2019, Rolex added a 42mm variant to the Yacht-Master range that became the largest size of the brand's three-hand sailing watch.

As with the existing 42mm model, both new variants are equipped with Rolex Oysterflex bracelets. The black lacquer dial is also updated with yellow gold indices as well as yellow gold hands. Despite being a larger-sized luxury watch, that model still flies somewhat under the radar, as it comes in a more subtle white gold color with a traditional black dial on an Oysterflex bracelet.

All of the attention will be squarely on the destro GMT-Master II. So maybe, just maybe, these will be available? But I kind of think this might just be the sleeper release of the Rolex lineup. This thing has 'em, giving it a much sportier feel in the same vein as watches like the Submariner and the GMT-Master II. However, this watch does not have a functional bezel. It even has the same three, six, and nine applied numeral-set a la the Rolex Explorer. So that begs the question, what's changed? So that means this watch has a smooth polished bezel and crown guards. Well, now we know what it was all about: An update to the brand's most esoteric steel sports watch, the Air-King. Today, the Crown has unveiled what looks to be the exact same model as it's been over the last six years.

Rolex's New GMT-Master Is A Total Game Changer (DMARGE)

Rolex has unveiled a radical new take on their popular GMT watch, which has already got a nickname: the 'Destro'.

Even stranger is how the date window has been moved to 9 o’clock. Most left-handed watches (i.e. watches with a crown on the left-hand side) keep the date window in the typical 3 o’clock position. It’s hard to overstate just how radical the Destro is for a brand like Rolex, who’s normally fairly staid and is more about evolution than revolution if you catch our drift. The Destro’s GMT hand is also dipped in green. Yes, these photos aren’t flipped: the Destro’s crown is indeed on the left-hand side, as is its date window, which is now at 9 o’clock instead of 3 o’clock. Why ‘Destro’? Well, it refers to the fact that this new GMT-Master is designed for those who wear their watch on their right hand. After what’s felt like a lifetime, Watches & Wonders – the world’s biggest watch fair – is back for 2022.

Introducing Two New Wild Rolex Yacht-Master 42mm Models – One In Yellow Gold And Another With A Falcon's Eye Dial · Rolex is really flexing with these two ...

The Yacht-Master line is something of an oddball in the Rolex lineup. On one hand, I love the yellow gold model because – well – I love yellow gold. Of course, the biggest difference between a Yacht-Master and other Rolex sports watches is that has come exclusively in precious metals. Of course, that wouldn't be the case for true sport yachting, but let's be real – the target audience for the Yacht-Master doesn't really get down with that kind of boating. Much like the existing white gold, these new variation takes things into new territory in terms of case and dial material. In addition to this new 42mm model, Rolex has also unveiled a new Yachtmaster 40 in white gold (a first for that collection) and a rotatable – yes you read that right – multi-colored sapphire bezel and iced-out lugs.

A green and black bezel destro new for Watches and Wonders 2022.

It is a wearable 40mm Rolex sport watch in solid stainless steel, but with a very specific design change that happens to be quite democratic – allowing the right-wristed into the fold. At the same time, this feels less like something Rolex would do and more of a Tudor move. People are no doubt already calling this the "Sprite" GMT after a range of soda-inspired nicknames in the collection, but Sprite colors are yellow and green. In order to create this new reference, Rolex was able to maintain the the ref. We need only look to the Tudor Pelagos LHD to see a similar release in recent memory. Shocker number two: The crown protruding from the left side of the case.

An 18k yellow gold option will now be available in 42mm for the first time, while the previously-released white gold option in the same size will now carry a falcon’s eye dial. Accompanying the GMT-Master II in the spotlight for this release is the all-new Air-King, its 40mm case now including new crown guards. Powering the timepiece itself is the brand new calibre 3285, dubbed by Rolex as a “new-generation movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex.” With 10 patents filed just for this COSC-certified movement, its Chronergy escapement guarantees a power reserve of 70 hours.

Watches & Wonders 2022: Rolex Launches New Models (LUXUO)

Oyster Perpetual Air-King to the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II, there's a bit of something for every watch fan in this new release.

Like the original — which was first launched in 1992 — this Yacht-Master 42 will also include a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a Cerachrom insert and a raised graduation. On this model, the crown and crown guard are placed on the left side of the watch. Featuring a completely redesigned case with crown guard and straight sides (like the majority of Professional category models), the new model exudes quality and class.

The aurora borealis and the chromatic dance nature performs on the horizon at dawn are what, according to Rolex, inspired the bezel of this new Yacht-Master edition, studded with trapeze-cut diamonds and sapphires in blue, silver and pink. Like the original model, the new version includes a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a Cerachrom insert with a raised graduation, not to mention the innovative Oysterflex bracelet. The 2022 iteration of the Air-King has a more legible and “harmoniously balanced” dial, the manufacture says, due to the addition of a “0” before the “5” on the minutes scale, which puts double digits between each five-minute interval.

The 2022 Rolex Air-King Feels Like No Other Rolex (gearpatrol.com)

For 2022, Rolex revisits one of its most polarizing watches, to strikingly agreeable results.

Switching over to the new case might sound like a small change...but for Rolex, it's major. But there's one big difference: crown guards, which protect the crown from bumps and provide a much more sporty and robust character. The Air-King has always been polarizing, and this new model will likely remain so. Keep in mind, it's not every year the Rolex refreshes a collection with changes this significant. With a couple of deft tweaks, Rolex has given an overlooked model new life. Follow all the releases here and on

Rolex Just Dropped a New GMT Master II That No One Saw Coming (gearpatrol.com)

Rolex tends to release a new model or colorway on a single bracelet type, but the new ref. Righties, think about how you wear your watch — on your left wrist, where the crown (especially a chunky Rolex Triplock crown) digs into your hand. But is that truly the case, so to speak?

A left-handed GMT? The Air-King reimagined? That's not all. Here are the Crown's most notable new releases for 2022.

It's got small tweaks and refinements, but it's really the Oyster case with its sporty crown guards that gives this watch a niche all its own within Rolex's catalog. Rolex Unveils Daring 'Flip of the Wrist' for 2022 Collection (Man of Many)

Rolex has unveiled its 2022 collection including a GMT-Master II for left-handers, a new Air King, Day-Date, and Yellow Gold Yacht Master 42.

All three feature a 24 flower motif on the dial and are available in steel, rose gold, and white gold. New for 2022, the Yacht-Master 40 will be cast from white gold and feature a rotatable bezel set with a sparkling array of stones. New versions of the Day-Date 40 have been equipped with calibre 3255 since 2015 and define quality Rolex watchmaking. With a retail price of $15,500 AUD, this is the Rolex to have in 2022. This is also the first time we’ve seen a green and black ceramic pairing on the bezel on a GMT-Master II. While Tudor, Panerai, and TAG Heuer have offered quality options dedicated to left-handers for years, we’ve only seen a handful of custom order Rolexes designed for left-handers float across the auction block in recent years – most notably this Stella dial Ref. 1803 in 2015.
