Thanks to Australia not having PlayStation Now, players down under will not have access to PlayStation Plus Premium. Instead, we have Deluxe.

This means that, unlike the 19 other countries with the service, we don’t have access to the range of PlayStation 3 games available on the service. We here in Australia don’t have access to Sony’s PlayStation Now service, which is their cloud streaming service. Introducing PlayStation Plus Deluxe, the Premium downgrade for countries that don’t have PlayStation Now (like us!).

In ditching PlayStation Now and merging it with PlayStation Plus, Sony appears to be trying to simplify its subscription offering. On the music front, Spotify has a single paid tier but offers discounts if you subscribe as a family or a couple, while Apple recently added a discounted plan that restricts it to being controlled with Siri commands. You get access to a broad array of games as part of a subscription, and Microsoft has committed to releasing its major first-party games on its subscription service the day they release. But each tier of PlayStation Plus offers radically different amounts of content for your money. Finally, the $17.99 PlayStation Plus Premium gets you up to an extra 340 games, which include games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PSP, and PS3. Some of these additional games are available to download, but others — like those originally released for the PS3 — can only be streamed. It’s a lot of choices, and it means there are a lot of decisions to make. The pricing of the new PlayStation Plus Premium tier, as analyst Daniel Ahmad points out on Twitter, suggests that it’s targeted at exactly these users. But that still doesn’t explain PlayStation Plus Extra, Sony’s middle tier that offers PS4 and PS5 games. Yet, despite its complexity, Sony’s new PlayStation Plus tiers are arguably simpler than the subscriptions it already offers. It’s a much-needed step towards improving Sony’s subscription offerings, but in the process, Sony has created a complicated array of price points to choose between. $9.99 gets you games on either Xbox or PC, or $14.99 gets you both, plus the ability to stream games over the cloud (handy if you want to play them on more portable devices like phones) as well as access to online multiplayer thanks to including Xbox Live Gold. But now that they’re official, the truth is a lot more complicated.

There’s a lot of hay about how PS Plus 2.0 is positioned as a counter to Game Pass, and while such comparisons are fair, I’m not entirely convinced they capture the full picture. PS Plus Premium goes for $18 a month or $120 a year and adds games from previous PlayStation generations, plus game demos. To me, the big takeaway from today is nothing to do with competing corporate behemoths. PS Plus Extra is $15 a month or $100 a year, and adds a library of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. But such mental exercises conveniently gloss over the fact that Sony has no need to compete directly with Game Pass. Its first-party games are doing just fine. Sony’s first-party games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War already tear up the charts and enamor both fans and critics; they don’t need the extra attention from a subscription service. At launch, PS Plus Extra will include 400 PS4 and PS5 games, anchored by marquees like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. PS5 owners will note, by the way, how some of those games overlap with the offerings made available through PS Plus Collection, which makes 20 of the best-selling PS4 games available to PS5-owning subscribers of PS Plus at no extra cost. Game Pass, per its latest update, features around 450 games, roughly 350 of which are playable on PC. You can download any game from the library to Xbox or PC, and stream approximately 100 games on compatible devices, including phones. Xbox puts first-party games—everything from smash hits like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 to forthcoming blockbusters Starfield and Redfall—on Game Pass at launch. But Microsoft, apparently confident in the retention rate of Game Pass, charges only $1 for the first month. But the two deviate enough in details and approach that it’s not a one-to-one comparison. Both offer access to hundreds of games.

PlayStation focuses on making the best single-player narrative experiences around and the company has excelled at that for the last decade. From the outset of this generation, Xbox has really put the emphasis on affordability, backwards compatibility, and not needing to own an Xbox to play Xbox games. The broad crossover of games being compatible with and available on multiple platforms means we at least don’t end up with the ridiculous mess of TV streaming where you watch seasons 1-2 on one service, subscribe to a second service for season 3, and then give up altogether and consider piracy for season 4. As for how much this will all cost, there aren’t any official Australian numbers at the time of writing, but we do know Essential will cost the same as the existing Plus offering, so we can guess from there. Much like TV streaming, the market started with one essential service (Xbox Game Pass) and then fractured from there, becoming flooded with everyone wanting to get in on the monthly payment action. S/PlayStation 5 era has finally seen the two companies own their gaming identities, thankfully rendering the console wars obsolete for anyone serious about games, and making the choice between the two clearer.
