Tens of thousands of fans joined sporting legends, celebrities and family members to bid farewell to cricketing great at MCG memorial service.

Warne’s death was the family’s “darkest day”. Days before leaving for Thailand, Warne arrived at her house to pick up his bag with Bryan Adams’ hit Summer of ‘69 blaring from his car. “He was a person who made everybody feel very special. “He was the king bowler, the great bowler – but also the great sledger,” he said. He was always about putting smiles on other people’s faces. He said his father never pressured him to take up cricket and “just wanted him to be happy”.

'You'll never captain again': England great reveals the moment Warnie sledge backfired... badly.

“We played Shane Warne, we played the Gatting delivery. “It obviously started with that Gatting delivery all those years ago and it is just that wow moment. “The flipper? “I think in the end (batsman Kevin) Pietersen summed it up pretty well. “I’ll be surprised if you haven’t got the footage of me running down the pitch, very next delivery after that slog sweep,” Hussain said as he laughed. At the time it seemed like a good thing to do because we needed 40 (runs) off 10 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Shane Warne Stand unveiled at MCG in emotional memorial for cricket legend.

“He didn’t think he didn’t need to play state cricket and he was so good he was probably right. “He had remarkable confidence in his ability. He was involved with a lot of our young spinners and did a wonderful job with them. He would say ‘I am still the best spin bowler in Australia. I can do it Brownie, get me a game.’ “And I’ll tell you what I’m finding to hard to believe, the United Nations are a part of this. “I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that you won’t be able to walk down the aisle on my special day and be by my side. “He was serious. Shane loved life and lived for sport.” He was trying to blow your hair off his head. He’s actually infiltrated the United Nations and they are here.” He was saying, ‘get Sam’. I never thought one’s voice to bring such comfort until I can no longer hear it.

The details of that ceremony are private, as they should remain, because no matter how many overs we may have watched, almost none of us knew Shane Warne as a man. We didn't know Warne as a brother, a son, a father, a husband or a friend.
