Police allege Thompson broke into his former partner's home in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield on Friday night and stabbed her to death.
Thompson did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused. On Monday, Thompson was discharged from hospital and brought to Newcastle Local Court for a brief procedural mention. Thompson was arrested at about 12.40am on Saturday and taken to hospital, where he received treatment for a hand injury believed to be related to the incident.
Thompson briefly appeared in court this morning after being charged with the murder of 21-year-old Mackenzie Anderson.
