ATAGI is recommending a fourth COVID-19 vaccine for some ... (ABC News)

Australia's top vaccine advisory group has recommended a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for vulnerable groups. Here's what you need to know.

"ATAGI will continue to monitor emerging evidence and may recommend an additional dose for these groups in the future." According to ATAGI, most healthy or low-risk adults who have received a two-dose primary course and a single booster dose will have a "low likelihood of severe illness", and are therefore not recommended for an additional booster dose. "ATAGI considers there to be more evidence to support direct protection from an additional booster dose to those at highest risk of severe disease." For the time being, ATAGI says there is "insufficient evidence" of the benefits of an additional booster for other groups to make broader recommendations. "A four-month interval aligns with the evidence of waning [immunity] after the first booster dose, and will allow a large proportion of the eligible population to receive the additional dose before winter." In a bid to increase vaccine protection ahead of winter, the nation's top vaccine advisory group has recommended an additional booster dose for those who are at greatest risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Fourth 'winter' COVID vaccine recommended for people over 65 (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Older Australians and people at the highest risk of severe disease will be able to get a fourth coronavirus vaccine ahead of winter and an expected surge in ...

“[The] influenza vaccine can be co-administered with the additional booster dose of [a] COVID-19 vaccine. Omicron’s more transmissible BA.2 sub-variant is tipped to become dominant by the end of the month. “The extra dose is about preventing the most vulnerable from harm and those most at risk of severe illness,” Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said. In a statement, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation said there was “insufficient evidence of the benefits of an additional booster dose” to recommend it to other groups at this stage. The additional booster dose will coincide with the influenza vaccination program, meaning older Australians will be able to get the flu shot and the extra COVID-19 vaccine at the same time. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation announced the recommendation for an additional “winter” booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine on Friday to increase protection for people aged over 65 and other vulnerable groups, as foreshadowed by the Herald and The Age earlier this week.
