Jota sets up Manchester City semi-final date (unknown)

Liverpool have kept their quadruple hopes alive thanks to a late winner in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest from Diogo Jota.

FOREST WON'T GET A BETTER CHANCE THAN THAT! Johnson digs the ball out of his feet and whips in a beautiful cross for Zinckernagel to hammer past Alisson but he snatches the effort and it goes wide. Forest for the first time had a brief spell of possession and managed to create a dangerous scenario from the right wing through Johnson but his cross fell right into Alisson's arms. A ball is clipped over the Liverpool defence and Cafu finds himself in space but he snatches at the ball and fires high. Tsimikas whips in a ball with his weak foot and Jota pokes home to give Liverpool the lead. We have a goal at the City Ground! And it comes seconds after Forest should have taken the lead. Liverpool have kept their quadruple hopes alive thanks to a late winner in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest from Diogo Jota. They will face Manchester City in the semi-final at Wembley next month.

The way Liverpool play isn’t a plug and play move; it is bespoke, built around remarkable qualities. But there is also a thing where Liverpool respond to the key events. For Liverpool, though, it is about setting up a glorious April. Your correspondent has long argued a good season is one which is still alive in April. Well, no season has ever been more alive as the clocks move forward. Then the shape changes to a 442 and there is clarity but not much quality. Ibrahima Konate is excellent under the circumstances and Liverpool are fortunate to have him. But no one has been so much in all the here and now as these lads. The fluidity doesn’t help — there is such a thing as too much flexibility. Europe has been the only target. No season has ever had as much going for it at this stage. For Forest it will feel like a decent audition should they match their ambitions this season. The best chance of the game for Nottingham Forest is followed by a Liverpool goal. As ever, there is this thing within matches around changing the times of the key events.

Thank you for subscribing! We have more newslettersShow meLiverpool had extra pressure piled on their FA Cup quarter-final meeting with Nottingham Forest before a ball had even been kicked, with the draw pitting the winners against Manchester City and Pep Guardiola in the semi-final at Wembley. Jürgen Klopp and his staff seemingly did well at keeping this from the players, with Diogo Jota learning the draw for the first time in his post-match interview, but for the fans it added an extra layer of nerves to what was always going to be a tricky cup tie. However, Liverpool will not shy away from it, and the intense run of meetings with Manchester City could yet play into the hands of Klopp. His counterpart is more prone to crack under pressure, and there is no doubt that this looming semi-final has ratcheted it up another notch. It was all about getting it done against Nottingham Forest, particularly with something of a reset in the form of an international break on the horizon. It’s the semi-final stages of the FA Cup now, so big clashes are to be expected, but there is no doubt that Liverpool would have preferred to take on Crystal Palace or Chelsea in the capital. Nottingham Forest were good value, but Liverpool were ultimately able to earn progression, setting up the huge Man City fixture in the process.

This is a quarter-final today to get to Wembley and if you haven’t got the confidence to play, you can quickly flip it and say ‘Have you got the b------s to play?’ Excuse me, but that’s the football reality. Because of a lack of confidence and a lack of what I just said. “We didn’t play that badly today and Palace didn’t play that well, and we lost 4-0. We played at 70 per cent throughout the whole game and that’s not good enough.” “There is only so much time you can keep buttering someone up to give them confidence. “You can hear the atmosphere in the stadium, the fans; this is what they wanted and we wanted to give it to them.”

Liverpool earn Manchester City FA Cup semi after Jota edges out Forest (unknown)

Liverpool will face Manchester City in the last four of the FA Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest in the quarter-final.

Yates had a penalty shout when he skipped past Alisson and his leg caught the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm. “The game was defined in two minutes, where we had a really good chance and didn’t take it, and they created one, and did,” Cooper said. There is only one reason to be a part of it: to go to the next round and we did that, in an atmosphere where everything was prepared to give us a knock but because we were prepared for a fight, we came through and I’m really happy.” That day Pierre van Hooijdonk scored a last-minute equaliser and Steven Gerrard, in his debut season, stepped off the bench. Forest proved courageous and stubborn, leading Klopp to make a quadruple substitution midway through a stale second half, replenishing his entire midfield, and the hosts should have taken the lead, Philip Zinckernagel wasting a golden opportunity. Cooper, who spent five years coaching Liverpool’s academy, has revitalised Forest since inheriting a team that were bottom of the Championship.

Diogo Jota should've decided this tie far earlier, but his 78th-minute goal proved the winner as Liverpool eked out a 1-0 FA Cup win at Forest.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 7 -- Dealt well with Forest attacks that looked dangerous as the Championship side looked to find a way past Klopp's high line. MF Naby Keita, 8 -- Keita linked the play well in midfield and often looked like the Liverpool star most likely to make something happen. A perfect ball set up Jota for the opener. That was needed with the hosts making enough opportunities that could have resulted in a different story on another day. Close to giving away a penalty late on. Almost conceded through a mix-up in the second half but recovered well.
