Mao Yanfeng, the director of the accident investigation division of the Civil Aviation Authority of China, said that an all-out effort was being made to find the other black box. The cause of the crash in the mountains of Guangxi region has not yet been determined, with aviation authorities warning that their investigation would be very difficult because of the severe damage to the aircraft. China's aviation authority said on Wednesday the black box retrieved from the site of the China Eastern Airlines plane crash is a cockpit voice recorder, according to an early assessment.

China Eastern Airlines crash: "Foul play" should be a top ... (Travel Weekly)

“You’ll have a team that will look at the human factors part of the investigation. “Even with catastrophic failures, a lot of times you’ll see some opportunity for declaring an emergency, or mayday or, or something along those lines. “Access to the remote area will be a challenge, recovery will be a challenge, transparency perhaps could be a challenge,” said Daniel. There’s nothing that’s been released here that indicates any kind of distress call. The former director of the French Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, Jean-Paul Troadec, said the flight data was “very unusual,” but added it was “far too early” to draw conclusions. Both the Egypt Air and SilkAir flights also had “very quick and very sudden” dives straight to the ground.

China Eastern Airlines crash: recovery crews find black box recorder (The Guardian)

Officials hope retrieval of one of two onboard flight recorders will shed light on crash in mountainous area of Guangxi.

Police set up a checkpoint at Lu village, on the approach to the site, and barred journalists from entering. Highlighting the top-level concern, vice premier Liu He went to Guangxi on Monday night to oversee search and rescue operations. Rain in southern China on Wednesday had earlier halted the search for victims with risks of landslides that could endanger rescue workers scouring the difficult, heavily forested terrain, state television reported. The domestic passenger plane plunged from more than 20,000ft into a mountainous area of Guangxi, sparking an intense bamboo fire and almost disintegrating on impact. “It was like thunder,” he said. The jet appeared to dive to the ground at an angle of about 35 degrees from the vertical in video images from a vehicle’s dashboard camera, according to Chinese media.

China Eastern faces losses, regulatory scrutiny after fatal crash (Aljazeera.com)

Disaster comes as China's airline sector is struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We think most of the impact will be in the near term. Its losses are set to deepen after the group, including two subsidiaries, grounded its fleet of 737-800s following Monday’s crash. The indemnity alone will not have a material impact on our fair value estimates. Boeing declined to comment and referred Reuters to the statement it released on Monday, when it said it was ready to assist China Eastern and was in contact with United States transportation safety regulators about the crash. The tragedy has shocked a country that has one of the best airline safety records in the world and whose aviation industry was over the past decade, prior to COVID, one of the world’s fastest-growing markets by passenger traffic. China Eastern has been among the biggest casualties: The state carrier forecast in January a 2021 loss of 11 billion to 13.5 billion yuan ($1.7bn to $2.1bn), after a 11.8 billion yuan ($1.85bn) loss in 2020.
