New-look Hawks wind back the clock to start Mitchell era in style (AFL)

With the Hawks fielding their youngest side since 2005, Jack Gunston and Mitch Lewis feasted on an undermanned and undersized North Melbourne defence to hand ...

Lewis was brilliant on Sunday, taking six marks and kicking two goals in the opening quarter, before finishing three goals and nine marks (six contested). Gunston, meanwhile, who played just one game in 2021 after undergoing surgery to fix a bulging disc in his back in December 2020, threatened to tear the game apart. The South Australian drifted out of the match, finishing with 13 possessions, but he did enough to prove he is comfortable at the elite level. It’s no stretch to suggest Hawthorn wouldn't have won the game without two of their best players in James Sicily and Jack Gunston. Playing his first game since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the dying minutes against West Coast in August 2020, Sicily was sublime controlling the Hawks’ defence. He made amends midway through the second term, however, when his classy snap goal from 30m out extended North’s lead to 15 points. Horne-Francis needed just four minutes to get his first look at goal, after a strong lead and mark, but the subsequent shot from the stroke of 50m just missed.

Hawks steamroll Kangaroos to give new coach Mitchell his first win (The Age)

Hawthorn 2.4 4.7 7.9 11.12 (78) d. North Melbourne 2.5 5.8 6.8 8.10 (58). Hawthorn are on the board with Sam Mitchell recording his first win as coach in James Sicily's return from a knee reconstruction. For the Hawks supporters, despite the skipper ...

Key defender Ben McKay was the one player North Melbourne could not afford to lose, so it was a massive blow when he was concussed in the second quarter and taken out of the game. It opened the door and Hawthorn were good enough to walk through it as North finished the first half with a comedy of errors. The most obvious moment of celebration came in the first half when Horne-Francis kicked a classy goal on debut with a snapshot off one step. They worked hard to regain what they lost with Todd Goldstein’s goals either side of the final break threatening to bring the game back, but it was not enough. Worst of all they lost their dare kicking the ball down the line too often. They were dominating centre clearances and the midfield battle while Hawthorn struggled to convert. He won a centre clearance when he found three metres on his opponent within seconds and a chest mark on the lead in the opening quarter was a sign he will be hard to play on wherever the Kangaroos decide to use him this season. They also turned over the ball when Callum Coleman-Jones had a shot for goal. Even Hawks champion Jack Gunston couldn’t escape the infection, kicking 3.4 as he created opportunities before squandering them. I’m not going to get in his way,” Mitchell said. “Their level of belief hasn’t wavered,” Mitchell said. But then the game changed when North Melbourne tried to put together a chain of play across halfback but were let down by their skills, failing to link up and the Hawks kicked a goal.

Hawks 'rip game apart'; Roos' 'gamble' backfires as Hornet dazzles ... (Fox Sports)

Hawks 'rip game apart'; Roos' 'gamble' backfires as Hornet dazzles on debut: 3-2-1.

But he’s also the oldest, and at 33 years of age, not going to play a big role in their long-term future. King added: “It’s a gamble, to be so tall forward of centre. “They’re forward line just isn’t working, they went in really tall into the game. It’s failing.” “Gee he’s been good this kid. It’s exciting to see isn’t it.” In one of the highlights of the game, Horne-Francis put through his first career goal with a snap goal from 40 metres out in the second term. “This guy is going to be the headline act for a decade, I loved the way he’s started, he plays with a level of anger that most don’t carry and he’s got a great finish on him And they were exposed throughout periods of the game, in particular the third quarter, when all three were in attack as the Hawks were able to rebound the ball with ease. The Roos had the better of the Hawks in the second quarter but weren’t able to put it in the scoreboard, only putting on one goal on in the first 10 minutes. Brereton added: “For all the evidence that was presented to us, all the tapes we’ve seen of Horne-Franics prior to his first game, there was every reason to think this kid could come in Round 1 and have a real meaningful effect at AFL level. “That’s going to be a dangerous shuffle around now, because he’s the size and shape to play on Lewis,” Brereton noted in the first quarter.
