Lance Franklin's wait continues as Sydney beat GWS, Brisbane run ... (ABC News)

Lance Franklin remains four goals short of 1000 but Luke Parker leads Sydney to a gripping win over GWS. Meanwhile Brisbane storm home to beat Port Adelaide ...

After being written off as too old and too slow ahead of this season, the Cats smashed Essendon in the midfield on their way to a 20.18 (138) to 11.6 (72) victory. Sydney booted three of the first four goals to lead by 12, but the Giants slammed on the last flour of the term to lead by 15 at quarter-time. But the Lions lifted late in the third quarter, with Neale (31 disposals), Nakia Cockatoo, Lincoln McCarthy (two goals) and Noah Answerth playing a crucial part in the recovery. He added another early in the fourth and then handballed to Heeney for his second goal, with a third coming soon after as Sydney finished over the top of the Giants. Parker ignited the Swans' second-half charge with four majors and it was his second five-goal haul of a 236-game career, equalling his effort against Geelong at the same venue in 2015. Sydney kicked seven straight goals either side of three-quarter time to break open a previously close game, with the visitors winning 17.10 (112) to 13.14 (92) in front of 25,572 spectators.

Cats' scary 'demolition' statement; Sole silver lining in Dons' dark ... (Fox Sports)

Cats' scary 'demolition' statement; Sole silver lining in Dons' dark day: The 3-2-1.

We’re getting the best of Patrick Dangerfield.” you feel for the Bombers defence.” “It’s all been little kicks, no impact at all. “That was a demolition in every part of the game from Geelong,” Riewoldt said at half-time, while adding that many of the Bombers’ leading possession-getters were getting “junk” football on the outside while the Cats capitalised on the inside. With five minutes left in the third quarter, however, the Bombers came undone, coughing up a series of rapid goals that had them on the verge of a triple-digit deficit at the final change. Essendon kicked a couple of goals to start the second term in a good sign the side was able to turn things around, but the Cats hit back via Brad Close. Laverde returned to the ground early in the second quarter, but Cameron was subbed out of the match and looked in significant discomfort in the changerooms. It was a short-lived reprieve, however, with Cameron and then Luke Dahlhaus kicking goals quickly to make it five goals midway through the opening term. Matt Guelfi missed a chance to kick Essendon’s first goal of the day and paid dearly for it, with the ball going down the other end and Patrick Dangerfield slotting a shot on the run on the 50 metre arc. Esava Ratugolea started in the ruck for Geelong while Rhys Stanley started on the bench, with Ratugolea taking a great mark early in defence to get the crowd excited. “Over the pre-season, we‘ve taken a step back and looked to maximise the strength of our team and focus a little bit less on mitigating our perceived weaknesses,” he said. The Cats strolled to victory after a scintillating opening in front of 54,495 spectators, but the win was overshadowed by injuries to Cameron and teammate Sam de Koning while Essendon lost Kyle Langford to a soft tissue injury.

Geelong demolish Essendon but concerns over Cameron injury (The Age)

Geelong dispelled any doubts they will be a force again this season but they raised plenty of questions about Essendon as they dismantled them.

He was excellent and clearly the Bombers’ best. Ty Stengle has a rare talent to position himself front and centre, lurking at the feet of packs like a hungry puppy. His relationship with Eddie Betts and the knowledge of former teammate, now assistant Shaun Grigg, helped the Cats take a punt on Stengle, and he has impressed at every turn. Dangerfield had an interrupted 2021 with a suspension and then syndesmosis derailing his season but this year he looks more determined to be what the Cats need him to be, one of the competition’s best players. He cannoned into teammate Tom Hawkins and Essendon’s Jayden Laverde who were careering towards the ball. After two goals in the first quarter Cameron looked ready to cash in on his strong pre-season until calamity struck when he courageously went back with the flight of the ball in an attempt to mark. Laverde bravely tried to return, but it was obvious his ribs were injured. The Bombers eventually kicked 11 goals after Geelong’s pressure dropped off but Nic Martin kicked five. Eventually, he was sent to hospital. In hot conditions Patrick Dangerfield began the demolition with the new ball. The Cats reported a hip pointer injury for Cameron, but he was later sent to hospital. They double-teamed Hawkins to quell him after half-time.

Geelong v Essendon - The Four Points - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Cats ran over the Bombers in the first half of their 2022 season opener, kicking 12 goals to three. Tim Hunt has four points to dissect.

For those of us who have seen him over the last couple of seasons in the WAFL, this performance is of no real surprise, but he played with a determination and desire to prove himself that I can only think would serve Wright well. Admittedly Wright didn’t have much of an opportunity to impact the game in the first half, but every time he was presented with one he simply wasn’t good enough. This isn’t to say there weren’t any encouraging signs – there were a couple, namely that Kelly was able to remain deep in defence and provide some stability to the last line while Ridley was able to match up on a smaller player and had six intercept possessions. Selwood started the season like he has just about every season he has been on a list – with a near-faultless performance that wasn’t highlight-laden, but was one that basically every other player in the comp would love to have – 27 touches, nine contested, three goal assists, 10 score involvements, six clearances and six inside-50s. In our Mongrel Punt Crystal Ball I suggested that Jake Kelly could be the recruit of the year, and I think it bears some explaining. I know, I know – jokes about the Cats being old are about as old as the Cats themselves. Second, he kept hitting the ball to the Cats! Seriously, I can think of at least five different occasions in the first half where Draper essentially put the ball down the throat of a Cats midfielder. This was a new look Cats team that was far less focused on controlling the ball than it was on controlling the field. I must admit, I felt genuinely sorry for James Stewart and Jayden Laverde in the first half – not even an entire defensive six of Stephen Silvagni’s would have been able to stop Hawkins and Cameron from scoring. The Bombers looked completely rattled in the first half, at points looking like they were three or four players short on field as they tried to stem the flow of bleeding about as well as a bandaid functions for a bullet wound. For the first time since 2010, Geelong and Essendon met in a round one encounter at the MCG. Like that day 11 years, the match ended with the Cats victorious, though this one was far more impressive. The ball movement, the dominance at both ends of the ground, and the ability to nullify the Bombers greatest strength – their clearance work – and then use it as a weapon against them was a sight to behold.
