Knights stun Roosters to open season in style (NRL.COM)

Five-eighth Jake Clifford was the star for the Knights but it was a team performance, with the back five of Kalyn Ponga (146m), Dominic Young (124m), Dane Gagai ...

- Dane Gagai celebrated his return to the Knights with a try in the 14th minute after Tedesco misread a swirling Jake Clifford bomb that bounced awkwardly for the Roosters captain. "You don't win the premiership in round one but it was important for us to implement some of the stuff we'd worked on. Guys were a bit underdone for playing NRL. We just had too many that couldn't get to a standard we wanted to. The 10 minutes we were down to 12 and they didn't break us ... we showed a ton of resilience defensively": Knights coach Adam O'Brien. Kurt Mann appeared determined to ensure his 150th NRL match was one to remember when he put a big shot on Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves that forced a turnover and was then combined with Adam Clune and Kalyn Ponga to engineer a try for winger Enari Tuala. The try also featured a big don't argue from centre Bradman Best on Roosters centre Paul Momiroski and a flick pass to Tuala that will feature in highlight reels for the rest of the season. - Kurt Mann forced another Roosters error with a heavy shot on Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and the Knights capitalised in spectacular fashion, with winger Enari Tuala scoring in the 32nd minute to give his side a 10-0 lead.

'Pulling guys out of games without any symptoms': Robbo questions NRL's new concussion rule.

“It’s frustrating in the moment. “This is a weird one for me, there’s no doubt that Radley comes in and has obviously a whack to the head and doesn’t feel great but the Roosters physio comes out and does a test, he stays on the field but has Hannah reported it was actually the medical expert in the bunker that said this was a category one and Radley needs to come from the field so I know that they’ve put in a medical expert in the bunker to rule out teams looking after their own players but it’s really hard to see how that can be sort of judged.” Cronk told the panel. “So for them to go category 1 instead of category 2 was tough for us. “They have direct communication with the refs so the bunker in this case has identified Victor Radley’s incident as a category 1 that’s the highest rating possible, he will not return to the field of play and as a result the Roosters lose an interchange for the rest of the game.” “If he has to come off for concussion we had a scrum in the meantime and we still didn’t take Radley off at that period, it’s a strange one.” They don’t have any symptoms at all.

Robinson pinpointed a few guys "being a bit underdone playing NRL" due to the injuries the squad had in the off-season. The Knights took a 10-2 lead into halftime, after tries to Dane Gagai and Enari Tuala. The experienced Gagai returned to Newcastle this season after four years away at South Sydney. "The addition of Dane Gagai was massive," Knights skipper Kalyn Ponga said. They (NRL) have made a call on how to get rid of the cheating in the system that we all acknowledge has been there," Robinson said. "You don't win the premiership in round one but it was important to get off to a good start against quality opposition," Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien said. Newcastle have spoiled the return to the SCG party for the Sydney Roosters, handing them a convincing 20-6 defeat and restricting the glamour club to just one try in their opening match of the NRL season. The Knights scored four tries and if it hadn't been for a late four-pointer to Paul Momirovski it would have been a complete humiliation for Trent Robinson's men on Saturday afternoon.

Roosters legend Arthur Beetson to be honoured after grandstand snub (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Venues NSW is in damage control after snubbing the rugby league legend, but a different way to celebrate Artie's legacy is in the works.

A statue [outside the SFS] would be fitting.” As for plans for a statue to be erected in his father’s honour, Mark said: “The family thinks that’s a great honour. We’re now working with the club about a statue in honour of Arthur Beetson, who was a Roosters great.” He had his greatest moment being lifted up after winning the 1975 premiership in that precinct as well. “We’re still working through the logistics of what that ‘significant item’ will be,” Mark said. A proud Queenslander, Beetson already has a statue outside Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Ill-Discipline Cruels Roosters in SCG Return (Sydney Roosters)

The Sydney Roosters have been defeated 20-2 in their opening round match against the Newcastle Knights in what was a frustrating afternoon at the Sydney ...

Heading into the final ten minutes, the Roosters failed to yield, and a penalty in the ruck opened a prime opportunity to claw their way back - but their opponents' defence continued to deny the Red, White and Blue. Unable to cross the line, the Roosters headed to the sheds with their first points of the season coming from a Sam Walker penalty goal - with the scores at 10-2 in favour of the Knights. Points may have eluded the side on that occasion, and while they found themselves under pressure through a forced drop out, Tedesco ensured the Knights would have to work their way back with a booming kick that pinned them in their own half. Just as they looked to break the line on the ensuing set, a Kalyn Ponga pass went astray and the Roosters were back with the ball, with Keary mounting pressure and forcing a drop-out - only for a big hit on the following set forcing the ball free. Lindsay Collins threw himself into the action with a number of big collisions as the Roosters found themselves in an arm wrestle - but it was a wayward bounce giving the Knights the first points of the afternoon as Gagai crossed the line. Just as the Roosters looked to have scored an emphatic try to kick-start their campaign, James Tedesco was cruelly denied by the bunker - with the Chookpen venting their disapproval with Connor Watson found to have impeded in the line.

We’re now working with the club about a statue in honour of Arthur Beetson, who was a Roosters great.” With the view that the 1974 and 1975 premiership skipper is deserving of a grandstand in his honour still prevailing, Shepherd was also quizzed as to whether Beetson's moniker would be found within the stadium after all. It’s all in the past.
