Brisbane have overcome an almighty scare to maintain their winning streak in the NRLW to beat St George Illawarra 22-18 at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.
I felt like the tries we conceded weren't within our defensive plans and we tried to solve it ourselves. We're happy we pushed them the whole way but do we want more in this competition? The way we started the game, you make your own luck. Bent isn't known for her speed but the Dragons back-rower delivered a second half try to remember when she gathered a Page McGregor pass and ran 60 metres, beating fill-in fullback Hayley Maddick to the line. The way we could keep getting ourselves back into the game and come away with the win is a great sign that the girls are competing hard." [The close finishes] are what you train for and they're the battles you want to be in.
A brave Brisbane Broncos outfit have dug deep to fight off the Dragons 22-18 in a brutal and enthralling top-of-the-table NRLW clash at Comm Bank Stadium.
A cracking conversion from the sideline by Brown extended the lead to 18-12. Rachael Pearson converted from the touchline to square things up 6-6. Pearson converted to set up a blockbusting final 25 minutes. Brown converted from the left to make it 6-0 in the 5th minute. A clever option from hooker Lauren Brown, rolling a grubber kick in from dummy half close to the line saw the ball rebound back to backrower Tallisha Harden who did well to twist in the tackle and score. Both teams were undefeated going in the game and the ferocity of the contest did justice to that top billing as both teams ripped-in with some massive tackles and desperate scramble to defend their lines.
A sweetly struck field goal by star recruit Kurt Capewell helped Brisbane to an 11-4 win over an out-of-sorts South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium on Friday ...
It was a tough, gritty game and we haven't played that way for a long time and that's what Kurt [Capewell] brings to the team, that grittiness, that drive, that hang in there. The final pass for Oates' try was a beauty from Capewell, who showed enough in one night to suggest he'll be one of the buys of the year. "I thought our defence was the best it has been since I've been here and that's the sort of stuff that we can really build a team around - that desire and that will to stop them from the scoring. I think the only way he is going to get better is to be out there. Almost 12 years to the day (March 13, 2010) since he made his NRL debut for Cronulla, Albert Kelly showed there's still plenty of life on the old legs as he outpaced the Rabbitohs defence on an 85-metre sprint to score Brisbane's opening try from an intercept. I think he can own his kicking a little bit more but it's a work in progress.
Former Hull FC and Hull KR star Albert Kelly went the length of the field in Brisbane Broncos' opening round win over South Sydney Rabbitohs in the NRL.
Kelly was given a starting shirt by Broncos coach Kevin Walters and he certainly made his mark. Kelly helped Hull FC win the Challenge Cup in 2017 and was also named in the Super League Dream Team in the same season. Kelly scored the game’s opening try in the 21st minute as he made an intercept and raced 90 metres to score near the posts.

In one of the best unscripted field goals you’re likely to see, Kurt Capewell smashed one over the bar to give the hosts a seven-point lead. After deserving the win over South Sydney, the Broncos need to prove this wasn’t a one-off by beating Canterbury next week. - Lachlan Ilias and Cody Walker need to improve their combination in a hurry.
Brisbane beat St George to stay top of the NRLW ladder, Parramatta battle past Gold Coast Titans.
Christian Pio added a final score to put some gloss on a battling 10-point victory to hand the Eels their second win of the season and condemn the Titans to consecutive defeats. Parramatta had to dig deep to beat a battling Gold Coast Titans side 24-14 in the second of Sunday's NRLW double header at Parramatta stadium. The Broncos have beaten St George Illawarra in a thriller to remain undefeated in the competition as Parramatta digs deep to beat the Titans.
Brisbane have gone outright top of the NRLW ladder with a tense, grinding win over St George Illawarra 22-18 at Sydney's Commbank Stadium.
For the Broncos, reigning NRLW Dally M player of the year Ali Brigginshaw combined well with halves partner Aiken to capitalise on the width their forwards provided. The 21-year-old crossed after St George had levelled the scores with 10 minutes remaining through a deft reverse pass from Quincy Dodd which allowed Elsie Albert to score her maiden NRLW try from close range. Brisbane have gone outright top of the NRLW ladder with a tense, grinding win over St George Illawarra 22-18 at Sydney's Commbank Stadium.
Life without Adam Reynolds smacked South Sydney right between the eyes as a bumbling and fumbling 11-4 loss to the Broncos gave rookie coach Jason Demetriou ...
“Cobbo is just one of those players that excites you when he touches the ball. “We talk about Selwyn Cobbo and what a shining light he was last year. Ilias struggled to assert himself in the first half where he had no runs. He was classy today,” Marshall said. To Ilias’s credit he had a crack and tried to conjure something. Many had hoped — or assumed — that the Bunnies could kick on with Cody Walker still in the team. Not having that tonight was evident.” “But I got the sense from Adam Reynolds talking through the trial period that he liked what Albert Kelly did over the summer. But with 21-year-old Ilias alongside him, Walker had to shoulder a lot more responsibility. Benji Marshall marvelled at how much the narrative had changed in the last week. Reynolds, absent due to COVID for his new club Brisbane, was missed by both sides at Suncorp Stadium but the Rabbitohs missed him the most. He played really well tonight.”
We might only be a few games into the 2022 NRL season but the Brisbane Broncos could emerge as the most improved team of…
As for the short-term fortunes of the men’s side – while the potential is there for improvement this season, there will continue to be some painful moments along the way, but it will only spur the club to learn from them and continue to improve in the long term. While the men’s side have the potential to improve this season after a productive off-season and an impressive first-round victory, their women’s side continue to dominate in the NRL Women’s competition, winning their first two matches to sit on top of the six-team ladder. Win that one, and they could be 5-0 by the time they travel to the foot of the mountains to face reigning premiers the Penrith Panthers, in what will definitely shape as a major test of where the club is at, before they get another shot at the Bulldogs, this time at home, in Round 7. Examples of teams taking their time to build premiership teams in recent years include, among others, the Sea Eagles (twice, in 2008 and 2011), Dragons (2010), Rabbitohs (2014), Cowboys (2015) and Sharks (2016). With the Bulldogs playing the Cowboys this round, it means that, in the first three rounds, we have the three worst-performed teams of season 2021 playing each other, at the end of which we might get a gauge on which of them has the potential to improve this season. In their next three matches, they will play the Bulldogs, Cowboys and Warriors – three teams unlikely to play finals in 2022, and after that play host to the Roosters at home, meaning they only have to leave Queensland just once in that period (to play the Bulldogs in Sydney).
In their first outing for 2022, the Brisbane Broncos have produced a huge upset to defeat last year's grand finalists South Sydney 11-4 on Friday night.
Michael Ennis added: “For Brisbane it was all about their character, it was about their effort. “Tonight can be a real springboard for them (the Broncos). It can be a real kickstart for their season.” It was never going to be perfect.
