Apple has unveiled a faster silicon chip for a new desktop, a high point in Apple's move to power its devices with microprocessors designed in house.
Its first use will be in the creative professional-focused Mac Studio computer. Apple will offer two versions of the Mac Studio, one with the M1 Max chip and the other utilising the M1 Ultra chip. The new Mac Studio desktop starts at $1 999 with the new M1 Max chip, or $3 999 for a “fused” M1 Ultra chip.
Creatives and content powerhouses get another option for their desktop, as Apple intros a bigger Mac desktop, as well as a new chip for it and a nice new ...
You can even max out the M1 Max to a staggering $12K machine with 8TB storage, 128GB RAM, and the fastest M1 Max chip around. The M1 Max edition of the Mac Studio its apparently up to 2.5 times faster than the CPUI performance of fastest iMac 27 model, which is now no longer part of the lineup, with up to three times the performance in graphics, as well. Simply put, it’s a setup made for a smaller bunch of people than you might expect, and as such isn’t going to beg for everyone when it arrives from March 18. Apple notes the M1 Ultra can be configured with up to 128GB RAM, something that would likely cost a small fortune, but would deliver an immense performance for the computer it’s being thrown into. Move that to an M1 Ultra, and the two sets of M1 Max chips tied together give you nearly four times the CPU performance of that 27 inch Mac and nearly five times the graphical performance. Larger and heavier, Apple’s latest desktop almost triples the height of 2020’s M1 Mac Mini, while keeping the width and depth the same, and increasing the weight significantly.

The Studio Display is compatible with other Macs and iPads, but it was designed to match the Mac Studio. The M1 Ultra can play up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video, while the M1 Max supports up to nine. The Mac Studio can be purchased with either M1 Max or M1 Ultra chips. To dissipate heat and allow for quiet operation, the Mac Studio has a series of airflow channels at the back and at the bottom. Comparatively, the highest-end Mac Pro earned a single-core score of 1152 and a multi-core score of 19951. This is especially impressive given that the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip starts at $3,999, while a Mac Pro tower configured with a 28-core processor is over three times more expensive at $12,999. The extra weight in the M1 Ultra version is due to a difference in thermal needs. On the front, there is an SD card slot, along with two USB-C ports for M1 Max configurations or two Thunderbolt 4 ports for M1 Ultra configurations. There are four Thunderbolt 4 ports at the back of the Mac Studio, along with a 10Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones. According to Apple, the M1 Ultra's CPU is up to 3.8x faster than the highest-end Intel Core i9 iMac (which has now been discontinued), and up to 60 percent faster than the 28-core Mac Pro with Intel Xeon W processor. The Mac Studio is the newest Mac in Apple's lineup and is very early in its product cycle. The M1 Ultra chip is essentially two M1 Max chips connected together on a single die and able to perform as one chip, which Apple calls UltraFusion architecture.
Here's the swankiest possible desktop setup you can assemble with Apple's new hardware.
The Mac Studio is a new product line from Apple. It's compact in size -- like the Mac Mini, but taller -- coming in at 3.7 inches tall. It's the first machine from Apple that runs its brand-new M1 Ultra chip, which was announced alongside the machine at Apple's latest event. At 7.7 by 3.7 inches, the Mac Studio is designed to live under the formidable 27-inch monitor. Add in some $300 glare-reducing premium nano-texture glass and a $400 stand that enables you to adjust its height, and you're looking at a monitor totaling $2,299. (It's important to note that once you make a choice, your decision will be final: Apple won't let you add more memory or storage after you buy the computer.) At first glance, the bundle's base cost is about $3,600, which accounts for the $1,999 Mac Studio and $1,599 Studio Display. If you choose the highest possible processing power and storage options, however, the two devices converge to create an impressive desktop workspace for over $10,000.
It didn't take long for delivery dates for both Apple's new Mac Studio and its Studio Display to begin slipping once they were announced.
Delivery dates are currently showing well into April. The M1 Max Mac Studio still shows a delivery date of between March 24 and March 31, slipping from the initial March 18 delivery estimates. Customizing to other versions also changes the delivery date slightly.
